Tuesday night college hoops action brings us to an SEC showdown between the LSU Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies. The Tigers have owned this series in recent years, winning the last four meetings including two last season. LSU knocked off Mississippi State and the Aggies beat Vanderbilt last time these two teams took the court. Tip-off is set for approximately 7:00 PM ET from the Reed Arena from the campus of Texas A&M for this contest.
Tigers Buzzer Beater Beats BulldogsLSU overcame a 2-21 night from three as Skylar Mays knocked down a shot at the horn to give them a 60-59 win over Mississippi State, pushing their current win streak to four. Defense countered poor rebounding as the Tigers defense forced 18 turnovers while losing the battle of the boards 49-31. Emmitt Williams led the team with 17 points for the game. Charles Manning Jr. added 15 points from the bench and Mays scored 11 as well in the win.
Mays leads the LSU offense with 15.8 points per game. Williams averages 13.4 points and Darius Days contributes 12.3 points with 8.5 rebounds a night as well. The Tigers grab 39.2 boards per contest and they shoot 48.4% from the floor with 30.7% from three-point range. They commit 13.4 turnovers an outing and they shoot 74.5% from the free throw line as a team. Kenpom lists LSU as the 31st best team in the country so far this season.
Defense Fuels Another Win For AggiesDefense has been key for Texas A&M in their previous two games. They held Ole Miss to only 47 points before beating Vanderbilt 69-50 in their last contest. The Aggies led by as many as 31 in their rout of the Commodores. They dominated the boards in this contest, grabbing 38 rebounds to only 29 from their counter-part. Andre Gordon led the team with 15 points and Jay Jay Chandler added ten points as well from the bench in the win.
Josh Nebo leads the Texas A&M attack with 11.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Savion Flagg averages 10.9 points and Gordon contributes 7.4 points a night as well. The Aggies snag 35.4 boards per contest and they shoot 39.9% from the floor with 23.8% from deep. They commit 14.8 turnovers an outing and they make 67.8% of their free throw attempts as a team. The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I normally don't like to take road favorites in conference play, but in this case this is a total mismatch. LSU has quietly been one of the better teams in the country and I believe their offense will gain control of this contest, putting them ahead from start to finish. Both of these teams play well defensively, but the Tigers are the only one of these two who have an offense that I can back. LSU averages 79.3 points per game while Texas A&M only scores 58.6 points an outing. The Tigers also shoot 48.4% from the floor with 30.7% from three while the Aggies only shoot 39.9% with a poor 23.8% from deep, both well towards the bottom of the country. I just don't see Texas A&M hanging around in this battle as LSU will simply be too much for them.
Prediction: LSU Tigers -6
Full-Game Total Pick
I believe that odds-makers have set this total slightly too high. Both of these teams have played well defensively this season as these two only allow an average of 127.1 points per game combined from their opponents. Texas A&M plays at one of the slowest tempos in the country as they rank 339th with only 67.1 possessions an outing. LSU will attempt to speed the pace up some as they rank 137th in the NCAA with 72.6 possessions per contest themselves. Seven of the last ten meetings between these two teams have played to the under. The under has cashed in 11 of the Aggies's 14 games this season as well. I expect this game to be a great defensive game, although this contest could get one-sided as the Tigers are super efficient shooting. The pace of this game should be moving slow enough to keep this game under the total.
Prediction: Under 130.5
