Atlantic 10 action tips this evening as the Davidson Wildcats host the Richmond Spiders.

Richmond enters tonight’s contest boasting wins in two of three conference tilts. The Spiders unseated St. Joe’s and Rhode Island before falling 74-58 recently vs. Saint Louis. During a competitive non-conference trekRichmond went 10-3, beating Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Boston College before Radford and Alabama ran past the Spiders. The Radford home loss revealed an inconsistency from Chris Mooney’s men.

Those lapses will be tested tonight by a Davidson group chasing .500 status. The Wildcats overcame an 0-2 conference start by winning their previous outing 89-83 opposite struggling St. Joe’s. At 7-8, Davidson’s lone quality win this season comes against Nevada. It’s worth noting Richmond (#82) is just slightly above Davidson (#93) in KenPom’s latest ratings.

Last season, Davidson swept Richmond 2-0 during A-10 play.

Richmond looks for bounce back win vs. vulnerable conference foe

Richmond couldn’t find form opposite Saint Louis while shooting 39 percent overall and four of 21 from deep. The Billiken’s physicality also manifests as 13-3 St. Louis out-rebounded Richmond 38-29 and doubled their host’s free throws made 16-8. Jordan Goodwin (29 pts, nine rebounds) led his team’s winning charge alongside Billikens standouts Demarius Jacobs (11 pts) and Javonte Perkins (14). In defeat, Nick Sherod’s 17 pts led Richmond.

Lacking reserve help, Richmond rises and falls upon the contributions of its starting five. Blake Francis (17.6), Jacob Gilyard (13.8), Grant Golden (11.9) and Sherod (12.9) pace the nation’s #99 offense. The heavy minutes placed upon this group, however, create defensive obstacles that successful opponents generally exploit late. Containing baskets has become problematic during Richmond’s 2-3 downturn -the Spiders allow 67.8 ppg.

A win today places Richmond at 13 wins. Last year, the Spiders finished 13-20.

Davidson hopes for repeat outing from Gudmundsson

Following three-consecutive losses, Davidson's fortune changed in overtime recently vs. St. Joe’s. Jon Axel Gudmundsson added 30 points to offset Ryan Daly’s 28 as the Wildcats earned their first 2020 victory. Gudmundsson, the reigning A-10 Player of the Year, broke his slump and raised 7-8 Davidson’s hopes entering today’s meeting. Gudmundsson (12.8 ppg) is still searching for last season’s form, and the Wildcats' confidence which brought the group 21 wins a year ago.

Overall, Bob McKillop’s stagnant bunch averages 70.3 ppg and allows 67.6 ppg. Kellan Grady (15.8) leads Davidson’s scoring which relies on double-figure contributions from Carter Collins (11.8) and Luka Brajkovic (10.5). With Luke Frampton out for the year, much like tonight’s visitor, Davidson offers little bench production: that factor should loom large as each team’s opening unit must produce throughout to secure conference victory.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

With both sides pushing slower paces and rolling out limited depth, look for Richmond’s faster, more explosive attack to yield winning results. Simply, this Davidson offering hasn’t proven it can compete with a group on the Spiders’ level. Behind Francis, Gilyard, Golden and Sherod, Richmond will run its conference mark to 3-1 tonight while adding late offensive bursts in a tight meeting. Take the Richmond Spiders with the win.

Prediction: Richmond

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Noting each team’s deliberate pace, I’ll still take the Over tonight as this game becomes one where Davidson falls just short on its home floor. Expect star output from Wildcats Gudmundsson and Grady as Richmond counters with a distinct late push from its double-figure offensive quartet to push Over the total and earn the conference win. Take the Over.
