#647 San Diego State at #648 Fresno State

When and where: Jan. 14, 2020. Save Mart Center, Fresno, CA, 7 p.m.

Seventh-ranked San Diego State puts its 17-0 record on the line when they travel to play at Fresno State on Tuesday night in a Mountain West Conference game. The Bulldogs are 5-11 on the season and lost to the Aztecs by nine in their first meeting on Jan. 1.

Aztecs continue to roll

Since the start of the New Year, San Diego State has played a challenging schedule with games at Utah State and Wyoming and then at home against Boise State. The Aztecs met those challenges with ease, winning by no less than nine points.

On Jan. 11, San Diego State blew out a tough Boise State team, 83-65. The Aztecs jumped out early and were never challenged in the game. San Diego State shot 52.5 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from three-point range.

KJ Feagin led the way with a season-high 23 points while Yanni Wetzell added 20 and Malachi Flynn 19. Matt Mitchell pulled down seven rebounds to go with his 10 points.

Flynn leads the team in scoring (16.3 points per game) and assists (5 per game). Injured center Nathan Mensah, who is out for the game, averages 6.8 rebounds.

The Aztecs are fifth-ranked nationally in points allowed, giving up only 57 per game. They allow their opponents to shoot only 26.4 percent from three point range (8th) and 37 percent from the field (11th).

The offense is also very good, scoring 75.9 points per game (89th). They shoot 46.9 percent from the field (38th) and 38.5 percent from behind the three-point arc (17th).

While Mensah is still out, the Aztecs get a little more depth as sixth-man Aguek Arop and Joel Mensah returned from injury to play against Boise State.

Bulldogs have lost four of five

Fresno State has struggled all season long, including losing four of their past five. Included in those losses was 61-52 loss at San Diego State on Jan. 1.

Most recently, the Bulldogs fell on the road to New Mexico, 78-64. New Mexico led by four at the half and outscored the Bulldogs by 10 in the second half.

Orlando Robinson led Fresno State with 16 points while Jarred Hyder added 14 and New Williams scored 10. Robinson had a double-double with 12 rebounds as well.

Robinson leads the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game while Nate Grimes is the top rebounder at 9.6 per game. Injured guard Noah Blackwell averages 3.8 assists.

The Bulldogs score only 69.6 points per game, ranking 235th nationally. They are a little better on defense, giving up 66.7 points per game (121st).

Besides Blackwell, Fresno State may also be without guard Niven Hart and forward Chris Seeley, both out with concussions. Hart averaged 5.1 points per game.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

San Diego State breezed past Fresno State at home about two weeks ago. The game was close early, but the Aztecs defense and depth (even without Mensah and Arop) was too much for the Fresno State to handle. San Diego State has the fifth-ranked defense in the country, that not only challenges every shot, but also is excellent at forcing turnovers. Fresno is missing its starting point guard again, which will make it even tougher to score fo the Bulldogs. The Aztecs have won their past two games by double-digits and there’s no reason to think this one won’t be different.

Take San Diego State

Prediction: San Diego State

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

While San Diego State gives up only 57 points per game, it’s not a lock to just take the under when they play because the Aztec offense is also in the top 100 nationally. In fact, San Diego State games have gone over 11 times this season, primarily because they are a very good shooting team with three-point shooters in Flynn, Mitchell and Jordan Schakel and an inside presence from Wetzell.

Robert then turned things around in college when hr got involved on the newspaper staff. He started writing sports articles and then worked for the main daily paper. Covering sports led to betting on sports and I found I had a pretty good idea of picking winners. We are glad to have Robert on OUR team.
