We have a Horizon League matchup to consider for Saturday evening when the Cleveland State Vikings meet the Northern Kentucky Norse for an afternoon of Horizon League college hoops action. Cleveland State is 3-3 in the conference and enters this game riding a two-game losing streak. Northern Kentucky is 5-2 in the conference standings and is hoping to extend a four-game winning streak when they host Cleveland State.
Cleveland State Two Game Losing StreakCleveland State is playing .500 ball in the conference and has an overall record of 7-12 this season. The Vikings have won three of its last five games and Saturday marks a one-off road game followed by a four-game homestand and Cleveland State is 1-8 this season away from home.
The Vikings score an average of 63.3 points while allowing a seventh in the nation best 72.4 points per game. Cleveland State is shooting 41.1 percent from the field, a nation-leading 28.1 percent from downtown and 66.5 percent from the charity stripe this season.
Cleveland State has two players scoring in double figures and is led by junior forward Algevon Eichelberger. Eichelberger averages 13.6 points per game with a team-high 6.6 caroms and is knocking down 33.3 percent of his triple attempts this season. The Vikings forward scored 13 points with ten rebounds in a loss to Wright State.
Norse Four Game Winning StreakNorthern Kentucky is 5-2 in conference play and boasts a 13-6 overall record this season. The Norse are 5-2 this season at home and have won four of their last five games. Saturday is the second and last game of a two-game homestand and Northern Kentucky has three road contests following Saturday’s game against Cleveland State.
The Norse score an average of 74.3 points per game and allow 65.1 points per game this season. Northern Kentucky makes 45.4 percent of its field goal attempts, 33 percent of its triple tries and leads the nation with a 67.3 percent free-throw shooting percentage.
Northern Kentucky has three players scoring in double figures and is led by senior forward Dantez Walton. Walton scores an average of 18.4 points per game with a team high 7.2 caroms and 2.5 assists per game. Walton drills 41.7 percent of his triple attempts this season and is coming off a 19 point, six rebounds with seven assists kind of night in the Norse win over Illinois State.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I will take the Norse in this matchup. They are a good team riding a four-game winning streak and are 5-2 at home this season. Cleveland State isn’t a very good team at home or away but it’s 1-8 road record isn’t the stuff that wins many games as a road underdog. The Vikings offense is one of the worst in NCAA D1 basketball and they are up against a solid Norse defense. I will side with Northern Kentucky to defeat Cleveland State on Saturday evening.
Prediction: Northern Kentucky
Full-Game Total Pick
My math has this one ending at 134 points and that seems to fall a little bit on the high side. The Cleveland State offense isn’t anything to write home about and their terrible shooting along with its high turnover rate doesn’t lead to many points. Both teams play at a below-average tempo and that will definitely lead to a lower scoring game. I will play UNDER at 134 points and above in this matchup.
