The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks try and get their first conference win of the season, as they host the Northeastern Huskies on Saturday evening. The Seahawks lost their 12th game in a row on Thursday, losing a 63-61 decision to the Hofstra Pride. The Huskies beat the College of Charleston Cougars by a score of 79-76 on Thursday.
Seahawks lose on last second layupWins have not been easy to come by for the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks this season, as they haven't cracked the win column since before Thanksgiving. On Thursday, they were stuck in a back-and-forth battle with the Hofstra Pride, who entered the game with a record of 13-5 on the season. Mike Okauru, who finished with a team-high 17 points for UNCW, tied the game with a pair of foul shots with 35.3 seconds to go in the game. The Pride ran the clock down and Isaac Kante made a layup with five seconds left in the game to give Hofstra the victory. Shykeim Phillips added 12 points for the Seahawks, who shot 40.7% from the floor and 21.4% from three-point range. This was the Seahawks first game since the firing of their coach, C.B. McGrath.
“I’ve been telling them, life ain’t easy, man," UNCW interim coach Rob Burke said on starnewsonline.com about the program’s current situation. "Life is not fair. I can’t tell you why we were put in this spot, but we are the only ones that are going to get ourselves out of it. Nobody is coming to save us. Everybody is going to try and punch us, beat us up and beat us down and I can’t let them get beat down. I’ve got to keep finding little victories.”
UNCW opened the season with a 5-3 record, however three of those wins were against non-Division I teams. They are just 2-15 versus D-I opponents this season, losing 12 straight games.
Jaylen Sims leads the Seahawks with an average of 13.8 points per game, followed by Marten Linssen with 10.0 points per game. The Seahawks are averaging 69.5 points per game, while shooting 43.2% from the floor and 35.6% from three-point range.
Huskies rally late to snatch victory from the jaws of defeatThe Northeastern Huskies trailed by 12 points with less than 10 minutes to play, but outscored the Charleston Cougars, 26-11 down the stretch to pull off the comeback. Jordan Roland, who is tied for sixth in the NCAA with a 22.3 points per game average, scored a game-high 33 points, the fourth time this season he has scored over 30 points in a game. Bolden Brace joined Roland in double figures with 19 points (and 11 rebounds) for the Huskies, who shot 48.3% from the floor and 46.2% from three-point range.
The Huskies have won five of their last seven games, with their only two losses being a pair of two-point losses. Tyson Walker is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.6 points per game, while Brace averages 11.1 points per game. Northeastern is scoring 72.5 points per game and they shoot 47.9% from the floor, 40.7% from three-point range, and 81.3% from the foul line.

Full-Game Side Bet
Northeastern has won six of their 10 wins by double digits, while UNCW has nine of their 15 losses by double digits. The Huskies are 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, and are 6-2 straight up on the road this season. Northeastern is one of the best shooting teams in the country, while the Seahawks are near the bottom of the NCAA in most defensive categories. UNCW is 0-7 in the conference this season, and have lost 12 straight games. The Seahawks are playing just their second game with an interim coach and they may suffer a little bit of a letdown after nearly upsetting Hofstra in their last game.
Prediction: Northeastern -9
Full-Game Total Pick
Northeastern has one of the best shooting teams in the country. They are ranked 21st in field goal percentage, third in three-point shooting, and third in foul shooting percentage. UNCW is ranked 257th in scoring defense, 281st in opponents field goal percentage, and 279th in opponents three-point shooting percentage. Northeastern has scored over 70 points in five of their last seven games, and should get well above that threshold in this one. The Huskies are ranked 305th in the country in opponents field goal percentage (45.8%), so the Seahawks should be able to put the ball in the hoop pretty often also.
