We have a Conference USA (C-USA) matchup to consider for Saturday evening when the Old Dominion Monarchs meet the Marshall Thundering Herd for an evening of C-USA college hoops action. Old Dominion is 2-2 in the conference and enters this game hoping to end a two-game losing streak. Marshall is 2-3 in the conference standings and is hoping to end a two-game losing streak when they host the Monarchs.
Monarchs Two Game Losing Streak
Old Dominion is 2-2 in the conference and has an overall record of 6-11 this season. The Monarchs have lost two straight games and Saturday marks the end of a three-game road trip followed by a three-game homestand. Old Dominion is 1-6 this season on the road including two consecutive conference losses to Charlotte and Western Kentucky.
The Monarchs score an average of 61.9 points while allowing 63.2 points per game. Old Dominion is shooting 39.7 percent from the field, 26.1 percent from downtown and 67.4 percent from the charity stripe this season.
Old Dominion has three players scoring in double figures and is led by junior guard Xavier Green. The junior guard averages 12.9 points per game with 4.4 caroms and is drilling 29.3 percent of his three-point attempts. The Monarchs guard scored 11 points in their road loss to road loss to Western Kentucky.
Marshall Two Game Losing StreakMarshall is 2-3 in conference play and boasts an 8-10 overall record this season. The Thundering Herd are 4-5 this season at home and have lost three of their last five games. Saturday marks game two of a three-game homestand with Western Kentucky coming to town on Wednesday.
The Thundering Herd score an average of 75.3points per game and allow 71.4 points per game this season. Marshall makes 45.3 percent of its field goal attempts, 29.3 percent of its triple tries with a 64.4 percent free-throw shooting percentage.
Marshall has two players scoring in double figures and is led by sophomore guard Taevion Kinsey. Kinsey scores an average of 15.7 points per game with 5.1 caroms and a team high 4.5 assists. Kinsey is knocking down 27.8 percent of his three-point attempts and is coming off a 29 point, 11 rebound night in a home loss to Charlotte.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I will take the Thundering Herd in this matchup. Old Dominion has a heckuva defense but they don’t score enough points and that will be their undoing in this contest. Marshall is a good shooting team inside the three-point circle and that will give them enough points to win this game. Old Dominion allows too many triples and if the Thundering Herd can get hot from beyond the arc, they might blow the Monarchs out. I will take Marshall to defeat Old Dominion in this matchup.
Full-Game Total Pick
My math has this one ending at 135 points and that seems to fall a little bit on the high side. Neither team has an explosive enough offense to really run up the score and the Monarchs defense is usually too stout to get blown out very often. Marshall is one of the fastest playing teams in NCAA hoops this season but Old Dominion is more experienced and plays at a much slower pace and that will affect the Thundering Herd points total. I will play UNDER 135 and above in this contest on Saturday.
