ACC action tips tonight as the Virginia Cavaliers visit Georgia Tech.
After winning last season’s national championship, the Virginia Cavaliers find themselves stuck in a three-Game conference losing streak after dropping decisions to FSU, Syracuse and Boston College. Georgia Tech looks to continue the Cavaliers’ misfortune by wearing Virginiadown using interior force.
Virginia is 3-3 away this year. Georgia Tech is 3-6 from home.
Offensively challenged national champs seek to end losing streakFading are the days when Virginia could rely on talent and infrastructure to overcome nightly challenges. The Cavaliers’ two non-conference losses vs. Purdue and South Carolina revealed weaknesses the ACC has exploited since January 7. Now 11-5 overall, Virginia sits 3-3 in conference play. No longer ranked among the nation’s top-25, it is truly debatable whether the NCAA’s reigning champion can stand in tonight vs. middling Georgia Tech.
A recent offensive downturn where the Cavs have failed to surpass 55 points in defeated efforts arouses those doubts. Now, bettors are left to wonder if this trend can be reversed against plausibly beatable competition. Overall, the Cavaliers average 55.3 ppg and allow 49. The former number represents one of the nation’s worst while the latter its best. Opposite Georgia Tech’s lax offense, Virginia holds advantages on-paper. But it’s up to the Cavaliers’ core to force the issue and find the necessary points to regain winning form.
Georgia Tech hopes to overcome Virginia’s large defensive shadowThe wheels fell of late during Georgia Tech’s recent home loss vs. Notre Dame. In control for much of he contest’s 40 minutes, Tech lost composure as Prentiss Hubb and John Mooney combined for a winning ACC effort. Tonight, Tech must regain focus facing a wounded, defensively imposing Virginia collective.

And it’s the Cavalier defense which exacerbates GT’s #271 offense (#318 pace adjusted - and the pace will be slow tonight). Defensively, they Yellow Jackets a respectable 67.9 ppg. Though, the question remains: Can Michael Devoe, James Banks and cast add necessary points vs. NCAA’s too defense?
- Yellow Jackets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.

- Cavaliers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
- Cavaliers are 37-17 ATS in their last 54 road games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Neither side enters with great momentum, though Tech is definitely operating at a higher level. However, given Georgia Tech’s offensive issues, I like Virginia to snap their losing streak and pick up a win tonight. Of course, that win will come in controlled fashion with a low point total and unimpressive boxscore numbers. Virginia’s zone and collective offense will be enough at the final buzzer to push the defending national champions back on track following a serious wake-up call.
Full-Game Total Pick
The Under is almost a no-brainer given Tech and Virginia’s low offensive totals. But the factor which really makes an Over seem like a stretch is the Cavs’ national-leading defensive numbers. Even in their losses, and there have been a few lately, Virginia manages to keep the pace slow and the total beneath where the books place it. Tonight isn’t likely to deviate from that pattern. In an intriguing ACC matchup between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and defending national Champion Virginia, take the Under.
