The Canisius Golden Griffins will host the Rider Broncos on Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Rider Broncos are 3-3 in conference play after dropping three of their last four games. Canisius is 2-4 in conference play after starting 0-4 in the MAAC.
Last season these teams met twice with the road team winning each time. Rider defeated Canisius 82-73 on Jan. 11,.2019, and Canisius won at Rider 81-80 on Feb. 8.
Rider losses at the buzzerAfter starting the season 7-2, the Rider Broncos have now lost five of their last seven games. Friday night the Broncos, came in as a six-point favorite and lost a game that they must feel got away from them. Rider led the Niagara Purple Eagles 68-65 and had the ball with just one minute left to play, and ended up losing 70-68. Niagara guard, Marcus Hammond, caught an inbounds pass and knocked down an off-balanced fall-away 20 foot shot from Niagara guard, Marcus Hammond, at the buzzer.
The Broncos shot the ball well, going 27 of 56 (48.2%) from the floor and connected on 8 of 19 (42.1%) three-point attempts. The Broncos also outrebounded the Purple Eagles by 11. Unfortunately for Rider, as well as the offense performed, Niagara was able to match them, going for 26 of 54 (48.1%) from the field and 12 of 25 (48%) from beyond the arc while committing five fewer turnovers.
The Broncos are led by four players who were all preseason All-MAAC selections. Scoring leader Dimencio Vaugh averages 14 points and seven rebounds per contest, followed by Frederick Scott, who averages 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. There Marshall adds 13 points and a team-leading 8.8 rebounds per game. Stevie Jordan adds 12.5 points along with a team-leading four assists and 1.7 steals per game.
Collectively, Rider is averaging 72.6 points per game and allowing opponents to score 71.3 points per game on defense. The Broncos have been a strong team on the glass, outrebounding their opponents by 5.7 rebounds per game.
Canisius gets revenge against SienaAfter going on a six-game losing streak and beginning conference play 0-4, the Canisius Golden Griffins have won their last two games. Friday night, Canisius defeated Siena 73-63. Malik Johnson, a 5’10 senior guard, led the Golden Griffins with 24 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field, with seven rebounds and six assists. The win was revenge for Canisius that was defeated on the road against Siena, 73-72, on Dec. 23 of this season.

Malik Johnson leads the team in scoring, rebounding, assist, and steals (13.3 pp, 6.0 rebs, 5.6 assists, 2.6 steals). Perhaps even more impressive is that Johnson is averaging 38 minutes per game over the entire season. Majesty Brandon is second on the team pouring in 12.7 points per contest coming off the bench in all except two games.
As a team, Canisius is averaging 69.3 points per game and allowing 70.5 points. Gaining extra possessions are vital to the Golden Griffin's success, as a team they average 8.5 steals a game and hold a +2.7 rebounding advantage per game on average.
- Canisius is 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog
- Rider is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- Rider is 2-7 ATS on the road this season.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I am taking Canisius to cover the spread, even though from a talent perspective, this is a game that Rider should win. On the road, the Broncos have repeatedly underperformed in situations where they appeared to be the better team on paper.
Canisius is only 2-4 in the conference, but three of those losses came by four points or less. The Golden Griffins do not shoot well from the perimeter, but should still get a variety of good looks against a Broncos defense that is struggling. Canisius is a scrappy team, active at creating turnovers and grabbing offensive rebounds. With a chance to get back into the middle of the MAAC standings, expect the Griffins to show up at home.
Prediction: Canisius +1
Full-Game Total Pick
Canisius and Rider both like to speed up the game and try to force turnovers. Unfortunately for each team, when they aren't creating turnovers, opponents are shooting very well against them. I am taking the over.
Prediction: Over 144.5
