Interesting matchup here as the Detroit Mercy Titans will travel to take on the Butler Bulldogs. The Titans have lost their first two games, both by lopsided margins, while the Bulldogs have started the year 1-0. Butler is a massive favorite here, and the game will be nationally televised on FS1.
Rebuilding Year For Detroit
It’s been a rough start for Detroit. First they lost by 13 to Western Michigan, then lost by 16 to Temple. They shot just 35.7 percent from the field against Western Michigan, and they’re in for a much tougher defensive test from the Bulldogs.
They did get a little bit better against Temple, shooting 48.1 percent from the field and a respectable 36 percent from three. Freshman Antoine Davis scored 30 points against Temple and should be a major piece moving forward.
Detroit went just 8-24 last year, including 4-14 in Horizon league play, and their program has been in poor shape recently. They also have to replace last year’s leading scorer Kameron Chatman, as well as last year’s second-leading scorer Corey Allen. It should be a rebuilding year for Detroit.
Butler Has High Aspirations
Butler has been a great program over the last decade and has sky-high aspirations yet again in 2018. They soundly defeated Miami of Ohio in their opener, beating them by 22 points. Last year they went 20-13 including a 9-9 record in the Big East and made the conference semi-finals, where they lost to Villanova.

They made the NCAA Tournament and won their opening round game against Butler. They then fell in the second round to the second-seeded Purdue. They’ll have to replace last year’s leading scorer Kelan Martin, but return their next two leading scorers from last year’s team. Butler has a solid foundation and should continue to rack up big wins against the inferior competition on their non-conference schedule.
- 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400
- 15-5 ATS in their last 20 home games
- 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS win
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I like Butler a lot here, even with this massive spread. Simply put, I don’t see how Detroit remains competitive here. They have to replace so much of last year’s production, and have far inferior talent. This Butler group is hungry for another NCAA Tournament appearance, and should blow them out.
Prediction: Butler -26
Full-Game Total Pick
Detroit got a bit better offensively last game, and Butler wasn’t great defensively against Miami of Ohio. The strength of both of these teams in 2018 will be their offenses, and this one could be a shootout. Detroit will get down big early on, and will be forced to start chucking to catchup.
