Great matchup here as the Stanford Cardinal will travel to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels are riding high off two massive wins, and oddsmakers have them as lofty 17 point favorites here. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, and should be a good one.
Can Stanford Take Next Leap?
Stanford is 2-0, with season-opening wins over Seattle and North Carolina Wilmington. They’ll face their second straight team from North Carolina here when they take on the Tar Heels. UNCW is usually a very strong program, so that win means something, and it came by 13 points. The win over Seattle came by 22 points, and was also quite impressive for this Cardinal team.
Stanford used to be one of the best teams in the PAC 12, but their program has faltered in recent years. They took a leap in 2017, and made the second round of the NIT. That was just one year removed from finishing 14-17 and toward the bottom of the conference standings, so it was a major step. They’ll be looking to make the next leap in their progression this year, and a win or even just a competitive showing here would make a major statement.
UNC On Revenge March
The last time most people saw UNC on a national stage, they were embarrassed by Texas A & M in the second round of the NCAA tournament. It was the last game of the Joel Berry-era, and a major black mark on the program. The team is out for revenge in 2018, and is looking to prove to everybody they are still one of the best teams in the country. They won their first two games by a combined 60 points, but that came against far inferior competition.

UNC has title aspirations and will be going all out here to win by as much as possible on national TV. That being said, Stanford isn’t a creampuff like the first two opponents UNC faced, and they’ll be tested here. Stanford’s offense could pose serious problems, and it’ll be difficult for the Tar Heels to win this game by 20+ without key contributors from last year like Berry.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall
- 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I love the Cardinal here. I think UNC will do big things this season, but 17 is too large of a number for this spot. I think Stanford will surprise a lot of people, and make some noise in the PAC 12. They’ve covered their last four games, and I think that trend will continue here.
Prediction: Stanford +17
Full-Game Total Pick
The offense has been the strength of both of these teams, and this one has shootout potential. UNC scored 116 points in their last game against Elon, and I think their defense could struggle against their first real test of the season. There’s no way Stanford will contain UNC’s offense, so I love the over here.
