Florida International Golden Panthers vs. Cleveland State Vikings
Where and when: Wolstein Arena, Cleveland, Ohio, Tuesday, 7 pm EST
The Florida International Golden Panthers will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for a matchup with the Cleveland State Vikings on Tuesday night at 7 pm EST at the Wolstein Arena. These teams have not faced each other in quite some time, however, the Vikings picked up an 8-point home victory in 2018 as 4.5-point favorites. Covers.com is currently favoring the Golden Panthers by 6.5 points while the total has opened at 149 points.
FIU slips on the road versus NC StateAs 16.5-point underdogs, Florida International fell a game under .500 after falling behind on the road in the second half versus the Wolfpack of North Carolina State in their last outing. And while the Golden Panthers shot 51% from the floor in addition to hitting 10-three’s on the night, they also committed 21 turnovers while allowing six double-digit scorers for the Wolfpack as well. The team has certainly not prevented teams from scoring this year as they are allowing 45% shooting to opponents. This should certainly be a benefit for the Vikings, who are shooting a dismal 39% from the floor as a team on the year (61 points per game).
On the other hand, the offense is shooting 54% while averaging 82 points per outing with sophomore Devon Andrews leading with 17 points and 4 rebounds while freshman guard Tevin Brewer (11 ppg, 4 rebs, 5 ass) has also been critical to the success of the offense for the Golden Panthers. Furthermore, Osasumwen Osaghae is putting up 11 points along with recording 5 boards on the year as the forward is a potential double-double machine.
Vikings desperately in need of a winAt 1-3 on the year, Cleveland State can certainly use a win, particularly at home where they have played only one contest in 2019, which resulted in a 25-point win over the Edinboro Fighting Scots on November 9th. The Vikings have covered the spread in seven of their last twelve games at home dating back to last season, yet the team has not played very well during this time. In 2019, Cleveland State ranks in the 300’s in many of the major offensive categories as freshman guard Tre Gomillion is averaging 10 points and 6 boards while Hugo Ferreira is putting up 8 points per.
The defense happens to be the tip of the spear in the Vikings limited success this season in allowing 39% shooting to opponents on the year (32% 3FG). With this being the case, it will be interesting to see their defense squares off versus an offense for Florida International that has been on fire to being their 2019 campaign. Important to note that the Vikings have allowed 80+ points in six of their last ten home games.
- CLEVST is 15-36 ATS in their last 51 Tue. games.
- FIU is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I will back the Golden Panthers and the points in this instance as I happen to believe that they are indeed the better team at this point in the season. As pointed out, the Vikings are well under .500 against the number at home while Florida International has covered the spread in three of their last four road games. While the Vikings will put up some resistance early on, the Golden Panthers will control the pace of this contest as they will pick up a high-scoring victory, in the end, to get back on the winning track.
Prediction: Florida International Golden Panthers -6.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Again, while the Vikings have had a tendency to play much better in front of their fans at home, they have not fared well on the defensive end as of late. In fact, the over has been the result in seven of their last nine games, overall, while the Vikings have allowed 80 or more points in the majority of their last ten games. For a Golden Panthers team that has been lighting it up from the floor early on, look for the visitors to have an effective night on the offensive end as the total will certainly surpass its set mark for this contest.
Prediction: Over 149
