Tuesday night college hoop action in the James H. Hilton Coliseum features a match between the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the Iowa State Cyclones. Southern Miss fell last game to North Florida in close fashion. Iowa State defeated NIU last time around in a blowout. This is the first-ever meeting between these two schools. The Cyclones are listed as 17 point favorites and the total is listed at 141 and a half at the time of writing. Tip is set for 8:05 PM ET.
Southern Miss StrugglesThe Golden Eagles fell last game to North Florida in a game that came down to the wire 66-63. "We started off slow and weren't moving the ball across the floor to soften the defense," said coach Jay Ladner. Artur Konontsuk and Tyler Stevenson led the Southern Miss scoring effort with 13 points apiece, with Stevenson's coming from the bench. Depth has been a huge issue this season for this team. Their offense is average and won't catch many teams by surprise and they struggle against teams that shoot the three-ball efficiently.
All five of the starters for the Golden Eagles average over ten points per game led by Boban Jacdonmi with 19 points along with 8.7 rebounds per game. Konontsuk scores 13.3 points and Gabe Watson puts up 11 points per contest. Stevenson contributes 10.3 points and Leonard Harper-Baker averages 10.3 points and ten rebounds per night. Southern Miss only rolls out a seven-man rotation and relies on their starting five to play the majority of the contest.
Cyclones Rebound With WinIowa State got the perfect bounce-back win that they needed against NIU 70-52 after dropping their first contest of the year in the game before. The Cyclones trailed by double figures early in this game but pulled together over the course of the second half and the game was capped off by a 26-6 run in the second half. "It was a great test of our basketball character in the second half. Really good testament to these guys," said coach Steve Prohm. Iowa State only hit three of 25 three point attempts on the night, but their defense held the Huskies to only 18.6% shooting in the second half.

Rasir Bolton leads the Cyclone offense with 14 points per game. Michael Jacobson averages 12.2 points along with ten rebounds per contest. Solomon Young scores 11.3 points, George Conditt IV contributes 11 and Tyrese Haliburton puts up 10.3 points with 10.7 assists per night. Iowa State rolls out a solid nine-man rotation and they play a balanced style of play but will rely on the three in some cases.

Full-Game Side Bet
I like the Golden Eagles in this contest on Tuesday night. They've caught some bad breaks in their last two contests and their depth is the biggest problem. I believe that Southern Miss's defense is good enough to hold this game close. The Golden Eagles' starting five are in very good shape, as they are relied on to play at least 35 minutes of a contest. Iowa State's offense has been good, but I believe that Southern Miss will continue to play suffocating defense and slow them down. The Golden Eagles are slightly more efficient on offense, hitting about two percent more of their shots from both the field and three point as well. Also, Southern Miss grabs an extra rebound per contest than Iowa State, which should make for an exciting night on the boards. All of the numbers I see in this game points me to take the plus points in a game that the Golden Eagles should hang around in.
Prediction: Southern Miss Golden Eagles +17
Full-Game Total Pick
Both of these teams boast a potent offense, but the problem is that both teams play very solid defense as well. Something's gotta give there and I suspect it will be the offenses. Neither team has shot the three ball very well, but these schools have different approaches when it comes to shooting them. Southern Miss plays smart, slow basketball, looking for the best opportunity and taking high-percentage shots. Iowa State plays at a fast pace and attempts more than double the amount of three that the Golden Eagles attempt. I expect both defenses to key in on the other team's offensive game-plan and I expect this game to be a very sluggish, tough battle that will be decided by who wants it more in the paint and on the boards. I will play the under in this Tuesday night contest.
Prediction: Under 141.5
