Cal Poly Mustangs vs. Santa Clara Broncos Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 11-8-2019
On Friday night, the Cal Poly Mustangs and Santa Clara Broncos will do battle in this Big West Conference vs West Coast Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 10:00 PM ET.
You can listen to either game on the team websites.
Mustangs Looking For A Bounce Back SeasonThe Cal Poly Mustangs had a rough 2018-2019 season. They were 6-23 overall, 2-14 in conference play, and last in the conference. The Mustangs lost a lot of games by double digits and they had a lot of lengthy losing streaks, before they can get a single win. This team has a new head coach in John Smith and they have three starters coming back as well.
Cal Poly hasn't defeated a Division 1 team in the season opener since 2011. That victory they got was against the below-average San Jose State, but a win is a win. Surprisingly, the Mustangs have won the last three meetings against the Broncos. The all-time series is tied at four apiece. This team lost their two highest scorers and now it will be up to Mark Crowe to carry the load. He averaged ten points per game, led the team in rebound average with 4.6 rebounds, and he was third in field goal percentage.
Broncos Looking For Another High Scoring WinThe Santa Clara Broncos had an average 2018-2019 season. The Broncos were 16-15 overall, 8-8 in conference play, and sixth place out of ten teams in the conference. They are returning eight players and all five of their starters. Those five starters all know how to score and this team has plenty of depth.
In their first game of the season, the Broncos beat UC Santa Cruz 97-52. Santa Clara had a 20 point lead at halftime and they just cruised from there. They held Santa Cruz to just 20 points in the second half. The Broncos had six players in double figures and Donovan Mitchell led the team with 18 points. He also did a little bit of everything, by getting seven rebounds and four assists as well. Santa Clara lost the first four games of the season last year, and they will look to continue their high scoring ways against Cal Poly.
The top supporting trends for Santa Clara, found on Covers.com, are:
- Broncos are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games.
- Broncos are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The top supporting trends for Cal Poly, found on Covers.com, are:
- Mustangs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
- Mustangs are 0-2-2 ATS in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Mustangs are 6-18-4 ATS in their last 28 road games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Santa Clara Broncos will cover the spread because of how strong they came out in the first game of the season. Also, they have most of their starters back and that means the chemistry will be a year stronger. It also looks like the production is going to be very high and that all the players want to get on board. The Mustangs need to see what players will step up their game because one guy doing most of the worst won't cut it. Sure Cal Poly has the three-game winning streak going against Santa Clara, but the Broncos are the better team record-wise and they are in a slightly tougher conference. 87 percent of their production is returning and they have some promising Freshmen that will play a part of the teams' success as well.
Prediction: Santa Clara Broncos -16
Full-Game Total Pick
This game will go just barely under 143.5 points. Santa Clara already put up 97 in their first game of the season. Cal Poly scores around 66 points, but gives up high 70's to low 80s. They usually struggle against Division 1 schools and don't start off the season too well. So with that in mind, look for a slow start from the Mustangs and a couple of decent runs early from the Broncos. Santa Clara will score 40ish points in both halfs and Cal Poly will shoot okay in the first half and slightly better in the second half. The Mustangs have consistent field goal percentage numbers, but the Broncos have the better players, more guys who shoot the three, and they are good at getting that extra possession. Santa Clara wins 78-62.
Prediction: Under 143.5
