Detroit Mercy Titans at Temple Owls
NCAAB: Friday, November 9, 2018 at 7:00 PM EST
Detroit Mercy did not get off to a good start to the season losing their opening game by double figures. Last season the Titans were only 8-24 and 4-14 in Horizon League play. They have hope this season with new head coach Mike Davis and a few new talented players, but their season opener was not a good one.
Temple won their season opener game facing LaSalle and they look to move to 2-0 before beginning a tough stretch against sole legit non-conference teams. After this game, they face Georgia, VCU, Missouri, St. Joseph’s, and a top 10 Villanova team in five of their next six games. Last season the Owls went 17-15 losing in the first round of the NIT.
These teams have not played since the 2013 season.
Bad shooting opener
In their season opener, Detroit Mercy was on the road and they lost to Western Michigan 89-76 where they had a poor shooting game. The Titans only shot 35.7% from the floor and they allowed Western Michigan to 47% from the field. Detroit Mercy was outscored by 17 points in the first half and they lost by 13 points even though they forced 20 turnovers and only committed 10.
Freshman Antoine Davis did have a legit debut going for 32 points on 12/26 shooting and Josh McFolley and Lamar Hamrick were the only other players that went for double figures. The Titans lost their top two scorers from last season and if they have issues scoring their defense has to step up, which it did not in their last game. Dating back to last season the Titans have not been so big failing to cover in their last four games.
Defense leads to win
Temple was at home in their first game of the season where they played solid defense in beating LaSalle 75-67 where they won with their good defense.

The Owls only shot 38.6% from the floor, but they held La Salle to only 35.5% shooting and the Owls had three times as many offensive rebounds (15-5). Quinton Rose led Temple with 15 points on 4/8 shooting and Nate Pierre-Louis went for his first career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Rose is the returning leading scorer for the Owls and last season he averaged 14.9 ppg and only three players from the team averaged in double figures. Temple is a good defensive team and while Detroit Mercy really struggled with their shot in their season opener they cannot take the Titans for granted.
The Temple Owls are:
- 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Friday games
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win
- 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall
The Detroit Mercy Titans are:
- 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Temple had a pretty good season opener while the same cannot be said about Detroit Mercy. The Titans struggled to shoot the rock in their last game, which is not good facing an Owls’ team in their house that had a good defense. Temple will jump on Detroit Mercy early and keep the Titans in check with their solid D. The Owls will easily cover the spread moving to 2-0 on the young season.
Prediction: PICK: Temple
Full-Game Total Pick
Temple is not a high scoring team, but they have a solid defense. Detroit Mercy has many young players and they struggled, big time, shooting the rock in their season opener. Add these things up and you get an Under total. The Owls have an Under record of 4-1 in their last five non-conference game and that trend will continue. Temple will win big and the game will still go Under. Yeah, take the Under.
Prediction: PICK: Under
