Old Dominion Monarchs at Saint Joseph’s Hawks
NCAAB: Friday, November 9, 2018, Hagan Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 7:30 PM ET
The inter-conference matchup between the Old Dominion Monarchs and Saint Joseph’s Hawks will take place at the Hagan Arena on Friday and the hosts are looking for the win in their opening game of the new NCAAB season, while Old Dominion already started with a win over Navy.
The Monarchs secured a comfortable win over the Midshipmen on the opener
Old Dominion didn’t have trouble to beat the Navy Midshipmen on the opening night of the new campaign despite being the nominal hosts at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia. The Monarchs ended the 2017-18 season with a 25-7 record and at the top of the Conference USA, with a win ahead of the Middle Tennessee State. This time around, Old Dominion is hoping to retain the title in the conference but reaching the NCAA tournament will be their main objective.
Senior guard Ahmad Caver led the Monarchs in a 67-44 win over the Midshipmen with 24 points (7-15 FG, 3-8 3PT, 7-9 FT), five rebounds, and three assists; B.J. Stith had 14 points, team-high eight boards, and four dimes, while Xavier Green contributed with 12 points, four rebounds, and a couple of steals. Old Dominion limited Navy to a miserable 25 percent from the floor, while they allowed only five triples and scored ten on the other end.
The Monarchs had the 182nd offense in the NCAAB in the 2017-18 that averaged 73.4 points per contest, while they had a top 10 defense that allowed 62.8 points per game (8th). Old Dominion’s rebounding was solid as they were recording 37.9 boards per game (65th), while they were the 75th when it comes to assists per contest with 15.1 dishes a night. Old Dominion was 172nd in field goal percentage as they had 44.7 percent from the floor and 138th from downtown with 35.7 percentage, while they were the 228th with 7.1 three-pointers made per game.
The Hawks are facing a stern test in the opener in front of their own fans
Saint Joseph’s will open the new 2018-19 campaign with a couple of home games against Old Dominion and Monmouth, and they are hoping to book a pair of wins but it’s not going to be easy against the last year’s C-USA leaders. The Hawks ended the last year with a 16-16 record and in the 7th position in the Atlantic 10 Conference, with nine wins behind Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure. Their goals for this campaign is to get over .500 and this clash with the Monarchs will likely prove whether are they capable of playing with stronger opponents.
Of course we want to see you here in Hagan Arena, but if you can't make a game, you can follow along on the radio and on https://t.co/r9ZuP0REVB. https://t.co/0NTtG141c9#THWND pic.twitter.com/5DJ9r8hbJV

The Hawks had the 165th offense in the NCAAB in the 2017-18 that averaged 74.1 points per contest, while their defense allowed 72.2 points per game (170th). Saint Joseph’s was 79th in rebounding as they were recording 37.5 boards per game, while they were the 149th when it comes to assists per contest with 14.0 dishes a night. Saint Joseph’s was 296th in field goal percentage as they had 42.3 percent from the floor and 241st from downtown with 33.7 percentage, while they were the 134th with 8.0 three-pointers made per game.
- 2-5 ATS in their last seven non-conference games
- 7-2-1 ATS in their last ten games played at home
- 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games played on Friday
- 12-10 ATS in the last 22 non-conference games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings, while the Hawks won the previous one which was played in November 2015, 66-64 at the Hagan Arena. The hosts will be eager to open the new campaign with a win in front of their own crowd, but the Monarchs’ defense might prove to be a big stumbling block here, so I am backing the visitors to cover the spread. Saint Joseph’s suffered four home defeats in 15 games in the 2017-18 and this one looks like a tough matchup for them, so I am going with Old Dominion to improve to a 2-0 record.
Prediction: Old Dominion Monarchs +3 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
For those who prefer playing on the points, over is 11-4 in Hawks last 15 Friday games, while over is 19-7 in Monarchs previous 26 road games, so I am backing plenty of baskets here. The teams should combine for more than 145 points and over is 9-4 in Hawks last 13 non-conference games, while over is 4-0 in Monarchs previous four vs. Atlantic 10 opponents.
Prediction: Over 137.5 (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
Old Dominion easily won the opening half in their game with Navy but it’s going to be a whole another story against Saint Joseph’s on the road, and it could go either way, so I don’t have a clear idea which team to back. The spread is just -2 which makes it even harder to bet on, especially as I am expecting a tight affair, but the Hawks are opening the new season in front of their own fans, so I am giving a slight advantage to them.
Prediction: Saint Joseph’s Hawks ML (-150)
Half-Time Side Pick
The Monarch’s opening game of the season produced just 55 points at halftime but facing Navy is not the same as playing against the Hawks who can easily score 35-40 points in the first 20 minutes at home, so I reckon that the 65 total is a bit low. That is a great opportunity for the bettors who prefer playing on the over, which is also my choice for the first half on this one.
Prediction: Over 65 (-110)
