Cal Irvine Anteaters vs. Pepperdine Waves
NCAAB: Saturday November 10, 2019 at 8:00 PM EST
Cal Irvine won their opening game of the season on the road and hit the road again to face Pepperdine. Last season Cal Irvine won 30 games and advanced to the 2nd round of the Big Dance losing to Oregon. Last season the Anteaters were a solid road team winning 13 of 15 games away from home. They have not faced Pepperdine since the 2013 season.
Pepperdine lost to California by 16 points in their season opener and they look to improve upon last season where they went 16-18. The Waves do not have a lot of firepower in the scoring department and they will be facing a strong Irvine defensive team that ranked 21st in the nation last season in opponents’ points allowed.
Big time comebackIn their season opener Irvine beat San Diego 76-73 where they were down 14 at the half and then outscored the Toreros by 17 points in the 2nd half. They really clamped down on defense in the 2nd half holding San Diego to 25 points and for the game they held them to 39% shooting. The Anteaters missed nine of their 11 3-pointers but, overall, they shot a solid FG% of 47.2%.

Evan Leonard led Irvine with 19 points in the win over San Diego and while he was only 4/9 from the floor, he hit all 10 of his free throws. Tommy Rutherford had 16 points and Collin Welp went for 13 points as the other two players for the team to go for double figures. Leonard is one of the key players for the Anteaters and he has averaged double figures in the last two seasons. Cal Irvine has a lot of size and good perimeter defense and Pepperdine has their work cut out for them in this game.
Waves hung around for a whilePepperdine lost to California 87-71 in the opener where they were only down two points at the half but was outscored 52-34 in the 2nd half. They only shot 37.1% from the floor while they allowed Cal to shoot 57.4% and 52.6% from 3-pt land. Colbey Ross leads the Waves with 19 points but had a bad shooting game going 5/17 from the floor. Kessler Edwards had 18 points on 7/11 shooting and hit four of his five 3-pointers and Skylar Chavez chimed in for 13 points. Last season Pepperdine was 9-5 at home and they have covered the spread in 13 of their last 19 home games.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Irvine came back from a bad first half to beat San Diego in their last game and like last season the team will have a good defense. They are balanced up top and down low in the paint, which will give Pepperdine major problems. The Waves were just the opposite of the Anteaters in that in their season opener they fell apart in the 2nd half. Look for Irvine to get a better start in this game and even on the road they will win and cover the spread. The defending Big West champions will get their 2nd win and send Pepperdine to an 0-2 start.
Prediction: Cal Irvine
Full-Game Total Pick
While Irvine is a team that is led by their defense many of their key betting trends point to the Over. On top of that in Pepperdine's last eight games the total has gone Over six times. Irvine will play good defense in this non-conference game but the Waves will not get totally embarrassed on their home floor. The Anteaters will have a good game on offense facing a suspect defense and the Over is the pick in this game.
