Indiana State Sycamores vs. Dayton Flyers
NCAAB: Saturday November 9, 2019 at 7:00 PM EST
This is the first game of the season for both of these teams that both missed out on the Big Dance last season. Indiana State was led by a solid defense last season and they only had two players that average in double figures. The Sycamores were 15-16 last season and did not get an invite to play in a post-season tournament.
Dayton won 21 games and they felt they were a Big Dance snub and they lost to Colorado in the first round of the NIT. While the team lost their 2nd leading scorer the Flyers return some key players and leading scorer Obi Toppin returns after averaging 14.4 ppg and 5.6 rpg last season and was named to the Naismith Trophy watch list.

This is the first ever meeting between these teams.
Key is keyIndiana State returns leading scorer Tyreke Key, who averaged 17.4 ppg last season, who was an All-MVC Second Team selection last season. Jordan Barnes also returns after averaging 14.6 ppg last season and he and Key were the only players that averaged in double figures last season. The top four scorers for the Sycamores last season were guards and Bronson Kessinger is the leading returning frontcourt player and averaged 6.1 ppg and 2.8 rpg.
Kessinger is a center and only 6’7” and the Sycamores do not have much size. Blake Brinkmeyer is a 6’9” redshirt freshman that played a few games last season and the team is high on him being an inside presence. Last season Indiana State struggled on the road going 4-9.
The scorers are backFor Dayton not only is Obi Toppin back in the fold but so are Jalen Crutcher and Ryan Mikesell, who each averaged at least 10.1 ppg last season. Toppin was the Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year last season and shot a more than legit 66.6% from the floor and the 6’9” forward has a ton of upside. The Flyers can light it up from deep as well, as Crutcher is the best outside shooter on the squad and while Mikesell is a forward he can stroke it from deep as well stretching out the defense.
Last season Dayton won their first four games of the season and while they lost four of their next five games three were facing ranked teams. The Flyers may still be smarting from the Big Dance snub last season and that is not good for Indiana State. Last season Dayton was 13-4 at home last season.
According to the betting trends from Covers.com The Dayton Flyers are:

According to the betting trends from Covers.com The Indiana Sycamores are:
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 against teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Dayton has the talent to go far in the A-10 and get back to the NCAA Tournament. Toppin is one of the most heralded players they have had in a long time and they have had some good ones as of the better teams that is not from a major conference in the last several seasons. On the other side of the coin, Indiana State is a guard-heavy team that will struggle against teams that are legit in the paint. Well, that is what Dayton is. The Sycamores may hang around for a while, but the Flyers will simply fly by them with much more talent and Dayton will win and cover in their house in this season opener.
Full-Game Total Pick
Last season Indiana State was not a high scoring team but in four of their last five non-conference games, the total has gone Over. However, they are not a high scoring team and they face a Dayton squad that ranked a solid 46th in the nation in opponents' points allowed. Dayton ranked in the middle of the pack last season in scoring and they will not light it up in this one. While they will win handily they will do so because of their defense on the Sycamores. In this season opener for both teams, the Under is the solid pick.
