Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs. South Alabama Jaguars
Where and when: Mitchell Center, Mobile, Alabama, Saturday, 4 pm EST
The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss will travel to the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama, for a matchup with the South Alabama Jaguars on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm EST. The Golden Eagles won five straight matchups from 2010 to 2015, however, the series has been tied 2-2 with the Golden Eagles picking up a four-point win at Mitchell Center last year. No line has been set for this matchup.
Southern Miss moved to 1-0 on the year in picking up an easy win over the Delta State Statesman on opening night as they had an underclassman step up offensively to put the team on his back. Furthermore, their defense also stifled the Statesman in allowing just 43% shooting while causing a whopping 20 turnovers.
On the other hand, they will now face another red-hot team in the Jaguars that posted 82 points in their opener while shooting 52% from the floor. Important to note that South Alabama has covered in three straight meetings amongst these two schools along with four of the last five contests, overall.
Jaguars easy victory in openerSouth Alabama had five double-digit scorers in their victory over the Pikeville College Bears, with transfer Chad Lott led the offensive attack with 18 points alongside 5 rebounds. Senior Trhae Mitchell (averaged 13 ppg in 2018) continued his solid streak with 15 and 5 while senior Josh Ajayi (16 ppg in 2018) followed with his first double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds. As stated, their offense shot well over 50% for the night while their defense was also on point in allowing just over 30% shooting for the Bears.
Second-year coach Richie Riley had a good word for the defense after the game in stating, "Defensively we were very good, we disrupted them at the end of the second half to build a 13-point lead going into halftime. He was a big key for us because those blocks started our transition and gave us some energy when we play with that type of energy we are a good team." It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars fare on the defensive end versus a Golden Eagles squad that simply could not miss in their opener. The Jaguars are 3-4 SU in their last seven regular-season games but are 5-2 ATS in these games.
Jacdonmi shines in openerSophomore Boban Jacdonmi scored 29 points, 10 rebounds, along with a block for the Golden Eagles on November 5th. After recording just 131 minutes in his freshman year, he will be relied upon moving forward to provide an offensive punch for Southern Miss. As a team, the Golden Eagles were on fire to the tune of shooting 58% from the floor in addition to heavily outrebounding Delta State by a margin of 39-24. Things may not be as easy this time around with the Jaguars allowing just 32% shooting (15% 3FG).
Fortunately for visitors, they have additional offensive weapons in freshman Artur Konotsuk (off the bench) along with junior Leonard Harper-Baker who posted 18 and 13 points, respectively. Also, Harper-Baker posted nearly a double-double last year while starting 31 games for the Golden Eagles.
Pretty cool to see @i_am_bo_j13 and @jboogi10 on the national scoring and assists lists after last night. 📈— Southern Miss MBB (@SouthernMissMBB) November 7, 2019

While the Golden Eagles have won three of their last four road games straight up versus the Jaguars, they are also 1-3 ATS during this time. Southern Miss is also 7-4-1 against the number in their last 12 regular-season road games.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Southern won last year in Mobile, thus proving that they have the ability to pick up a win versus the Jaguars on their home court. On the other hand, they have not fared well versus the spread in these matchups. South Alabama has been excellent against the number at home, despite having some struggles in recent games. Look for the home team to get some payback after their four-point loss in last year’s game in Mobile. In all, take the Jaguars to pick up a momentum-building win in the end.
Prediction: South Alabama Jaguars
Full-Game Total Pick
I will back the over for this contest. South Alabama has the slight lean to the over on Saturday games, as this has been the result in seven of their last ten games, overall. Also, this has been the result in four of the last five games amongst these squads in Mobile. With the slight step up in competition, look for these defenses, which were stifling in their opening matchups, to show to vulnerabilities. It is for this reason that I will advise you to take the over in this Saturday matchup.
