The 6-3 Tennessee State Tigers will go on the road to face the 5-5 Arkansas Little Rock Trojans at 7:30 PM ET on Tuesday night. These teams are trending in opposite directions, as the Tigers are coming off three straight wins while the Trojans have lost two straight. They play very different styles of basketball, with the Tigers looking to speed it up while the Trojans will do their best to slow the game. It’ll be interesting to see if the Trojans can get a win against a tough Tigers team after falling in two straight. The Arkansas Little Rock Trojans are 6.5 point home favorites with a 136 over/under.
Tigers win three in a rowThe Tennessee State Tigers started the season 3-3 before winning three in a row and are now sitting 6-3. They’re coming off an 80-74 win over Chicago State in a game that they led throughout. Wesley Harris scored 27 points with seven rebounds on 9-13 shooting to lead the Tigers. He was complemented by 6’9 senior forward Jy’lan Washington, who scored 14 points with six rebounds and four assists. For Chicago State, Xavier Johnson had a career-game with 34 points for the bench. It still wasn’t enough to overcome the Tigers.
The Tennessee State Tigers are an extremely balanced team with four players averaging double-figures. Marcus Littlejohn (10.7 pts, 2.9 ast) and Mark Freeman (6.2 pts, 4.7 ast) are the two ball-handling guards that lead the team in assists. Wesley Harris (11.4 pts, 5.4 reb, 1.4 ast) and Jy’lan Washington (10.4 pts, 5.7 reb, 1.4 blk) control the paint and Harris can shoot from three as well. The Tigers rank 25th in the nation with 49.2% field goal percentage. They’re also in the top 100 in blocks (4.6 per game) and assists (15.8 per game). They spread the ball around and take efficient shots. They’ve won three in a row and will be looking to make it four on the road.
Trojans trending the wrong wayAfter starting the season at 5-3, the Trojans have lost to games in a row and are now 5-5 and .500. They’re coming off a tough 53-76 defeat against the North Texas Mean Green. Umoja Gibson was too much to handle for the Trojans, dropping 23 points, six boards, and three assists. Ben Coupet Jr. led the way for AR-Little Rock with 18 points and six rebounds. He was complemented by Markquis Nowell, who was the only other player in double-figures with 10. They were shut down by the Mean Green and put up just 53 points.
The Trojans like to slow it down, averaging just 65.6 points per game on a 43% field goal percentage. They don’t rebound the ball well (153rd) and are even worse at spreading the ball (237th in assists). Markquis Nowell averages 19.3 points for this offense and they go as he goes. Ben Coupet Jr. and Ruot Monyyong are the only others that average double-figures and they combine for 23 points and 14 rebounds a night. This is a team that’s going to beat you with Markquis Nowell and two big men that control the paint.
- Trojans are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.
- Trojans are 8-21-2 ATS in their last 31 games following a ATS loss.
- Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a road favorite.
- Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Tigers are underrated and the Trojans are overrated. The Tigers have won three straight and offer up a very balanced roster. I like them to cover the points in this game, but can see going with the money line as well as I can see the underdog Tigers winning this game. They shoot better from the field (+6%) and run a far more efficient offense. Look for Wesley Harris and Jy’lan Washington to make a difference on the inside and to play a big role in the Tigers covering here.
Prediction: Tennessee State +5.5
Full-Game Total Pick
This number is just too low for two offenses that can score the ball and two defenses that don’t offer up much resistance. The Tennessee State Titans and AR-Little Rock Trojans both average under 70 points a game, but they also don’t turn the ball over and I expect the two teams to invite a faster-pace than they’re used to. Both big men can run the floor and the guards have no issue chucking a ton of shots. I love the over here.
Prediction: Over 136.5
