The Nebraska Cornhuskers host the Purdue Boilermakers today in Big Ten action.
Following a 1-2 start, the Boilermakers have become one of the country’s hottest groups after downing nationally-ranked VCU and Virginia to highlight a 5-1 stretch. Purdue’s recent 69-40 win vs. the defending national champion Cavaliers represents the only blemish this year for Virginia. With this success, Purdue sits just outside the latest AP top-25 poll.
Nebraska has dropped four of five to fall two games under .500 heading into conference play. Recently, the Cornhuskers lost their Big Ten opener 96-90 vs. Indiana. That setback followed unsuccessful meetings with Creighton and Georgia Tech.
Last season, the Boilermakers defeated Nebraska 82-61.
With those factors considered, Purdue opens today’s contest as -11 point road favorites.
Purdue uses defense to forge new winning identityPurdue showcased its winning infrastructure recently by exploiting Virginia 69-40 to avenge last spring’s elite eight disappointment. Matt Painter’s defensively-oriented squad followed their signature win by handling Northwestern 58-44. Overall, the Boilermakers hold opponents to 54.8 ppg and 37 percent shooting: #6 and 38 respectively.

Led by Jahaad Proctor (14.2 ppg) and Matt Haarms (11.7) Purdue has received just enough offense to complement their constraining defense while imposing their new identity on quality opposition. After gaining a balanced offensive effort from motivated starters, the Boilermakers held Northwestern to 34-29 shooting during a selfless, disciplined performance. If that intensity is present tonight, Purdue can stretch its 68.9 ppg mark vs. Nebraska’s leaky defense and frustrate the Cornhuskers to claim a road cover.
Nebraska seeks repeat effort after taking Indiana to overtimeFred Hoigberg is tasked with bringing the best from a roster tear down from one season ago. So far Hoiberg has done just that while keeping his lightly experienced group competitive vs. standout teams while managing a 4-6 record. Led by Haanif Cheatham (13.6 ppg) and Dachon Burke (13.3) this year’s Cornhusker roster features eight capable players. That rotation gave host 10-1 Indiana an overtime scare Friday before ultimately falling 96-90. Dachon Burke’s 25 points vs. the Hoosiers infused an impressive offensive performance where teammates Cheatham (21),Thorir Thornjarnarson (17) and Cam Mack (15) each contributed. In a third straight losing effort, Hoiberg’s men showed fight vs. heavily-favored opposition. To cover or gain an upset tonight, similar results are needed vs. Purdue.
Overall, Nebraska averages 75.2 ppg (#112 NCAA) and allow 79.1 ppg. The Cornhuskers shoot 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep. Nebraska returns to its home floor tonight after an 0-3 road venture.
