Marquette Golden Eagles vs. DePaul Blue Demons
NCAAB: Tuesday, February 12, 2019, Wintrust Arena, Chicago, Illinois, 8:00 PM ET
Just three days after beating the Big East leaders Villanova Wildcats, the Marquette Golden Eagles will visit the DePaul Blue Demons in another Big East showdown. These two schools will meet each other for the second time this season, and the Golden Eagles have beaten the Blue Demons 79-69 as 8.5-point home favorites. Marquette is currently at the 2nd spot of the Big East standings just one game behind Villanova, while DePaul is at the 6th spot four games behind the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles have to stay on the winning path
The Marquette Golden Eagles (20-4; 9-2 Conf.) are coming off a very important 66-65 home victory over Villanova this past Saturday, handing the Wildcats their first conference defeat. Markus Howard had another big night, dropping 38 points on the Wildcats on 13-of-24 shooting from the field including five triples out of 11 attempts. The Golden Eagles are now just one game behind the leaders and need to stay focused. They are 9-1 straight up and 7-3 ATS in the last ten games overall, losing only at St. John’s 70-69 last week.
Marquette enters the matchup with DePaul as a No. 21 at the NCAA NET Rankings and a No. 29 at the latest KenPom rankings. The Golden Eagles are scoring 112.9 points per 100 possessions (31st in the country) on 46.1% shooting from the field (92nd) and 39.5% from beyond the arc (12th), allowing 95.3 points in a return (39th) on 40.5% shooting from the field (35th) and 31.9% from beyond the arc (71st). The junior PG Markus Howard is leading the way for the Golden Eagles, averaging 25.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per contest while making 44.0% of his field goals and 43.7% of his 3-pointers. The junior forward Sam Hauser is tallying 15.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, while the sophomore forward Theo John is adding 6.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per contest.
The Blue Demons will try to get their third straight victory
The DePaul Blue Demons (13-9; 5-6 Conf.) have won two games in a row including a 74-62 road victory over the Xavier Musketeers this past Saturday. The Blue Demons played some excellent defense, but their offense in the second half was even better as they nailed 44 points in the second 20 minutes of the game. The Blue Demons are just 3-4 straight up and 4-3 ATS in their last seven games overall, but they have an identical 5-6 conference record as four other teams including the 3rd-placed St. John’s.
The senior guard Max Strus is leading the way for the Golden Eagles, averaging 17.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while hitting 39.5% of his field goals. The senior forward Femi Olujobi is posting 13.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest, while another senior guard Eli Cain is adding 12.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.7 dimes per outings. DePaul enters the clash with Marquette as a No. 89 at the NCAA NET Rankings and a No. 97 at the latest KenPom rankings. The Blue Demons are scoring 107.9 points per 100 possessions (90th in the country) on 46.4% shooting from the field (87th) and 31.9% from downtown (298th), conceding 101.0 points in a return (118th) on 43.0% shooting from the field (140th) and 35.7% from beyond the arc (264th).
DePaul Blue Demons:

- 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings with Marquette
- Under is 4-2 in the last six games overall
Marquette Golden Eagles:
- 5-2 SU and ATS in the last seven games on the road
- 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS in the last six road meetings with DePaul
- Under is 6-1-1 in the last eight games overall
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Golden Eagles are on a four-game winning streak away from home and they desperately need to extend that streak to keep the pace with Villanova. Their defense is certainly a key factor on this one, and if they continue with a strong defensive performance, I think the Golden Eagles will beat the Blue Demons. Also, the Golden Eagles shooting from beyond the arc has been excellent lately, while the Blue Demons are struggling to defend the 3-point line. Hereof, I’m backing Marquette to cover.
Prediction: Marquette Golden Eagles -3.0 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
The under has hit in the last four head-to-head duels between Marquette and DePaul, and it is 9-1 in the previous ten meetings between these two schools. Also, the under has been hitting frequently in their games this season. The Golden Eagles’ defense is a top 40 and I expect them to shut down the Blue Demons’ offense, so I’m backing the under.
Prediction: Under 150.5 points (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
DePaul’s last three games were decided by exactly 12 points, and its last three games at home were decided by 12 or more points. On the other side, four of Marquette’s previous five games overall were decided by 10 or fewer points. I expect the Golden Eagles to win tonight, but I don’t think it will be a blowout, so I’m going with a reasonable winning margin.
Prediction: Winning Margin: Marquette Golden Eagles by 6-10 points (+400)
Half-Time Side Pick
The Golden Eagles were leading at halftime in three of their last five outings along with one trail and a tie at Xavier, while they had a 13-point lead over DePaul in their first H2H duel of the season. The Blue Demons were leading at halftime just once in their previous five showings, so I’m backing the visitors to cover tonight.
Prediction: Marquette Golden Eagles -1.5 (-110)
