For our Top Plays of the Day, check out today’s Deep-3:
Coastal Carolina travels to play Appalachian State Saturday in a game they need to win to keep pace in the Sun Belt Conference. The Chanticleers are 12-11 on the year and 6-5 in the conference. Appalachian State is 8-16 and 3-8 in the conference, so it’s a winnable game for Coastal Carolina on the road. Despite their record, Appalachian State has played well in recent road games, so they are no pushover. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina is coming off a loss at home to conference leader Texas State. This should be a good one.
Coastal Carolina loses to conference co-leader
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers fell to 12-11 and 6-5 in the Sun Belt Conference after a 65-57 loss to Texas State last Saturday. Conference leader Texas State jumped out early then survived a second half rally by Coastal Carolina to win. “I was disappointed with the way we came out [in the second half]… I knew they were going to pick it up. I knew we were going to see a lot of traps and presses,” Texas State coach Danny Kaspar said. The Chanticleers began the second half on an 8-0 run and cut the lead to three late in the second half. They had a chance to tie it, but Tyrell Gumbs-Frater missed a three in the final seconds. Zac Cuthbertson had 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead Coastal Carolina. Tommy Burton added 10 points off the bench. The Chants shot 35 percent from the floor and made just 3 of 20 threes. They forced 19 turnovers off 13 steals. DeVante Jones had 4 steals.

Appalachain State falls to Texas-Arlington
Appalachian State is 8-16 and 3-8 in the conference, but they have played very competitively on the trail as of late. They lost at conference co-leader Texas State by just three, then lost at the other conference co-leader, Texas Arlington 78-68 last Saturday. Ronshad Shabazz had 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Mountaineers, while Tyrell Johnson added 11 points. Justin Forrest, the Mountaineers’ second-leading scorer, had 7 points. Isaac Johnson and Bennett Holley added 9 points each. Appalachian State shot 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from three. They had 13 assists, 11 turnovers, and pulled down 38 rebounds.

- Chanticleers are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games following an ATS loss.
- Chanticleers are 5-14 ATS in their last 19 games following a straight up loss
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The last time these two teams met, Coastal Carolina won at home 89-72. It should be different this time as Appalachian State is playing better. They had won three in a row, but then suffered back to back losses on the road. But those two losses were against the top two teams in the conference, Texas State and Texas Arlington. Coastal also lost to those two teams on the road too, but by wider margins than Appalachian State. Also, the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two. I like Appalachian State at home.
Prediction: Appalachian State
Full-Game Total Pick
Appalachian State can score, averaging 80 points per game, but they give up 79 points per game. Coastal Carolina scores about 76 points per game and gives up 70 points per game. There won’t be a lot of defense in this game so this should be a high-scoring affair. The over is 6-0 in Mountaineers last 6 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and 6-0 in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Also, the over is 4-1 in Chanticleers last 5 vs. a team with a losing straight up record. Go with the over.
