Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. San Diego Toreros
NCAAB: Saturday, February 16, 2019, Jenny Craig Pavilion, San Diego, California, 10:00 PM ET
The Gonzaga Bulldogs continue their journey with the West Coast Conference showdown at Jenny Craig Pavilion where they will meet the San Diego Toreros. These two schools will face off against each other for the second time this season, and the Bulldogs have beaten the Toreros 85-69 as 22.5-point favorites in their previous meeting. Gonzaga tops the WCC 2.5 games ahead of the BYU Cougars, while San Diego is six games behind at the 5th spot.
The Bulldogs domination continues
The Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-2; 11-0 Conf.) are on a 15-game winning streak following a 73-60 victory at the Loyola Marymount Lions this past Thursday. It was another easy task for the Bulldogs who are among the most dominant teams in the country this season. The Lions fought bravely, but the Bulldogs allowed them just four points in the last six and a half minutes of the game. Gonzaga is 11-4 ATS during that 15-game winning streak, while the Bulldogs are 9-1 straight up and 6-4 ATS in their previous ten showings on the road.
Gonzaga enters Saturday’s matchup as a No. 1 at the NCAA NET Rankings and a No. 3 at the latest KenPom rankings. The Bulldogs are scoring 127.7 points per 100 possessions (1st in the country) on 52.6% shooting from the field (also 1st) and 37.3% from beyond the arc (50th), allowing 93.2 points in a return (17th) on 38.3% shooting from the field (7th) and 29.4% from downtown (12th). The junior forward Rui Hachimura is leading the way for the Bulldogs, averaging 20.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while making 59.8% of his field goals. Another junior forward Brandon Clarke is posting 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest, while the senior guard Josh Perkins is tallying 10.3 points and 6.7 dimes per game.
The Toreros are hoping for a miracle
The San Diego Toreros (16-10; 5-6 ATS) are coming off an 88-82 overtime defeat to the BYU Cougars Thursday night to record their third loss over the last four outings. The Toreros were in front for most of the game, leading by nine points at halftime, but their defense struggled in the second half to allow 45 points. San Diego is 5-5 straight up and 6-4 ATS in its last ten contests overall, while the Toreros are 8-2 straight up and 4-6 ATS in their previous ten outings on the home court.
San Diego enters the matchup with Gonzaga as a No. 101 at the NCAA NET Rankings and a No. 91 at the latest KenPom rankings. The Toreros are scoring 106.9 points per 100 possessions (112th in the country) on 47.2% shooting from the field (50th) and 34.8% from deep (155th), surrendering 99.4 points in a return (93rd) on 44.0% shooting from the field (193rd) and 33.1% from downtown (115th). The senior forward Isaiah Pineiro is posting 19.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game this season, hitting 51.0% of his field goals. Pineiro dropped 30 points on Gonzaga in his first meeting of the season with the Bulldogs. The senior guard Isaiah Wright is tallying 13.1 points and 5.0 assists per contest, while another senior guard Olin Carter III is adding 16.2 points per outing.
San Diego Toreros:
- 14-6 SU and 11-9 ATS in the last 20 games at home
- 1-9 SU and 4-6 ATS in the last ten games as double-digit dogs
- Under is 5-3 in the last eight contests overall
- 18-2 SU and 10-9-1 ATS in the last 20 games on the road
- 10-0 SU and 2-7-1 ATS in the last ten road games as double-digit favorites
- Under is 5-3 in the last eight games overall
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Gonzaga will continue its winning streak tonight, as San Diego just doesn’t have enough firepower to menace the Bulldogs. The question is – will the Bulldogs cover, as they did it just twice in their last ten outings on the road as double-digit favorites, and I think the bookies will have to set the spread above ten points. In the first H2H duel of the season, Isaiah Pineiro carried his team, but if he struggles tonight, the Toreros will be in big trouble. The Bulldogs are the better team in all aspects of the game, so I just have to take them to cover.
Prediction: Gonzaga Bulldogs -16.0 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
The over has hit in four of the last seven H2H meetings between Gonzaga and San Diego including the previous two games. Gonzaga is averaging 70.0 possessions per 40 minutes (64th in the country), while San Diego is recording 66.7 possessions per 40 minutes (213th). The Toreros will try to slow down the tempo, but the Bulldogs’ offensive execution is excellent, so I’m backing the over.
Prediction: Over 149.0 points (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
The Bulldogs have scored 84 or more points in seven of their last eight showings on the road. Their offensive rating is the best in the country, so I’m backing them to continue with the strong performance and surpass their chalk on team totals. The Toreros haven’t allowed more than 76 points in nine of their last ten games at home, but the matchup with Gonzaga is a completely different story. Last year, Gonzaga scored 77 points in San Diego, but the Bulldogs dropped 96 points on Toreros two years ago.
Prediction: Team Totals: Gonzaga Bulldogs over 82.5 points (-120)
Half-Time Side Pick
In three of its last five conference games on the road, Gonzaga had a double-digit lead at halftime. On the other side, San Diego is quite unpredictable, leading at halftime in three of its last five games at home including a 9-point lead over BYU last weekend when they lost the game in overtime. Also, San Diego was trailing by 11 points to San Francisco, still winning the game by four points. This is a tricky wager, but I’ll take the Toreros to cover and make this game interesting to watch during the first half. They were down by eight points at Gonzaga in the first H2H duel of the season.
Prediction: San Diego Toreros +9.5 (-110)
