Elon Phoenix (14-14) at Charleston Cougars (22-6)
When and Where: Thursday, February 22, Charleston, South Carolina, 7:00 P.M. EST
The Elon Phoenix will travel south to take on Charleston this Thursday evening in a CAA matchup. Elon is in a rough patch having lost three in a row to drop to .500 overall and 6-9 in CAA play. The Cougars on the other hand, have won 10 in a row and sit comfortably atop the CAA standings at 13-3. Elon won the first matchup at home 63-58.
Elon offense has vanished
Elon has gone through this season as a high-scoring team that can make anyone pay when they are dialed in from three. In the second half of the season, they have gone downhill and struggled to score. The defense has not gotten any better though, to compensate. They went from having a promising season to a .500 team that is struggling to stay afloat. As good as the Phoenix are at shooting threes, their defense is just as poor at defending them. They have allowed almost 800 threes to be attempted with 36 percent of them going in.
The Elon offense has gone downhill in the second half of the season. Their rebounding has not helped. Opponents average about three more rebounds per game than the Phoenix allowing for extra chances from three. The Elon Phoenix live and die by the three but lately it has been more of the latter. Their three-point percentage has dropped to 36 percent on the season which is still good but not good enough when threes account for more than half their shots. Poor rebounding puts even more pressure on them to hit the three. Tyler Seibring leads the team with 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Charlestons offense steps up
Charleston trending in the opposite direction as Elon. They have been solid all season but really took off in the second half of the season. The Cougars are on a 10 game winning streak fueled by the emergence of their offense. While the offense has stepped up, the defense is still their bread and butter. They allow an average of just 67.5 points per game. The Cougars do a great job of maintaining possession so opponents rarely get a chance to score, especially in transition. Charleston allows only 9.9 turnovers per game.
The offense of Charleston currently sits at an average of 73.7 points per game but they have been improving greatly during this winning streak. The Cougars have scored over 80 points in their last five games in a row. Their last loss came 10 games ago to this same Elon team but the offense has completely turned things around since then. The scoring is led by Jarrell Brantley who puts up 17.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Brantley missed 10 games due to injury but his return has really kick-started the scoring.
- 0-12 ATS in last 12 Thursday games
- 1-5 ATS in last six road games
Thanks to the return of Jarrell Brantley, the Charleston offense is finally up to par with their defense, causing a huge winning streak. They are a much more complete team than Elon. Elon has an offense that can score from three but that has failed recently leaving them with nothing. The Cougars are 13-0 at home and will likely remain undefeated.
