SE Louisiana Lions (22-11) at Saint Mary’s Gaels (28-5)
NCAA: Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 10:00 p.m. ET
The SE Louisiana Lions will take on the Saint Mary’s Gaels for the first round of the NIT Tournament on Tuesday night. Saint Mary’s was arguably snubbed from the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels went 28-5 and 18-2 in West Coast Conference play. The team had marquee wins at Gonzaga and against New Mexico State. Jock Landale leads the Gaels as he is putting up 21.4 points and 10.3 rebounds. SE Louisiana had a strong season going 15-3 in conference play. Unfortunately, the Lions lost by four to Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Final. Jordan Capps (13.2 ppg), and Marlain Veal (13.1 ppg) lead the Lions attack. Can Capps lead the Lions to a big upset?
Lions fall to Lumberjacks
On Saturday, the SE Louisiana Lions lost 59-55 to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. Joshua Filmore led the Lions with 14 points and five rebounds but he only shot 3-of-10 from the field. Marlain Veal went for 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the loss. The Lions shot 46 percent from the field and the Lumberjacks shot 42 percent. Stephen F. Austin out-rebounded SE Lousiana 34-27 in the contest. Moses Greenwood and Jordan Capps added eight points and three rebounds apiece. The difference in the game was turnovers as SE Louisiana committed 15 and Stephen F. Austin had 11.
Gaels defense struggles in loss
Last Tuesday, the Saint Mary’s Gaels lost 85-72 to the BYU Cougars in the West Coast Tournament semifinals. BYU outscored Saint Mary’s 44-35 in the second half to take control. Jordan Ford led the Cougars with 27 points and six rebounds. Landale had 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Neither team played defense in this one as the Cougars shot 61 percent from the field and the Gaels shot 50 percent. Saint Mary’s out-rebounded BYU 27-24 in the contest. The Gaels had trouble containing Yoeli Childs who had 33 points and six rebounds. Calvin Hermanson added 12 points in the loss. The Gaels committed 10 turnovers and the Cougars had only six.
The SE Louisiana Lions are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS win.
- 7-2 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels are:
- 3-7 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss.
Landale will be too much for the Lions inside. However, the spread is too large to trust the superior Gaels team. Look for Capps to have a solid game to keep the Lions within reach.
