With March upon us, postseason tournament play begins as the NIT tournament starts this Tuesday. In this first round matchup, the Campbell Fighting Camels will travel to Greensboro Coliseum to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans. Campbell enters this game with a 20-12 record while UNC Greensboro enters this game with a 28-6 record. Now, both teams will be looking to improve on their records this Tuesday.
Clemons Must Carry Campbell To A Win
This season, Campbell looked to make it into the NCAA tournament behind some veteran leadership. So far this season, the team was solid during the regular season as it won the regular season conference title. However, the team quickly lost in its conference tournament to Gardner-Webb as the team’s NCAA tournament hopes were crushed. In that game, Campbell’s defense was awful as it allowed its opposition to score 79 points on over 59% shooting from the floor. With an elimination game up next on the road, Campbell’s defense will need to play a lot better.
The Campbell Fighting Camels are led by point guard Chris Clemons who has been tremendous this season. Last season, Clemons averaged 24.9 points per game along with 4.6 rebounds. This season, he has looked even better as he is currently averaging a career-high 30.0 points per game along with 5.1 rebounds. Clemons has also been extremely clutch for the team as he has hit some big shots in the last few minutes of several contests. If Campbell plan on winning this game, he will need to carry them down the stretch.
UNC Greensboro Blows Bid Opportunity
This season, UNC Greensboro looked to make it into the NCAA tournament behind some veteran leadership. So far this season, the team was extremely solid as it went 28-6. However, the team ended up blowing a second-half lead to Wofford in the conference tournament championship game as the team’s NCAA tournament hopes were crushed. In that game, UNC Greensboro’s offense was awful as it only scored 58 points on over less than 38% shooting from the floor. With an elimination game up next at home, UNC Greensboro’s offense will need to play a lot better.
The UNC Greensboro Spartans are led by senior guard Francis Alonso who has been tremendous this season. Last season, Alonso averaged 15.6 points per game along with 2.9 assists. This season, he has looked even better as he is currently averaging a career-high 17.2 points per game along with 2.5 assists. Alonso was one of the only players who actually played well against Wofford in the team’s last game as he scored 21 of the team’s 58 points.
- Under is 5-0 in Spartans last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Under is 4-1 in Spartans last 5 non-conference games.
- Under is 5-1-1 in Fighting Camels last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Under is 5-1-1 in Fighting Camels last 7 games following a ATS loss.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Although these teams are both extremely solid, I still believe that UNC Greensboro is the deeper team while it also possesses one of the best defenses in all of college basketball. Campbell is solid but has struggled a bit on the road this season and I can see the Spartans playing extremely solid defense against Clemons in this game. Give me the Spartans at home in this one.
Prediction: UNC Greensboro -10.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Both teams have the ability to score a lot of points but I think that their respective defenses are highly underrated. This is the first round of a postseason tournament and I expect them both teams to bring it defensively in what should be a physical contest. Both teams have also had a lot of time to rest in the last few days so I would not be surprised to see both teams come out flat as they struggle offensively throughout this game. This total is too high as a result so I like the under.
Prediction: Under 142
