Tuesday, March 19 8:00 P.M. National Invitation Tournament
The NIT will tip off tomorrow with all teams in action. In this match up, Memphis will take on San Diego. The Toreros made a run in the West Coast Conference Tournament, but were eventually taken out by Saint Mary’s. Memphis won two games in the American Athletic Conference Tournament before being edged out by Houston. They will face off in the NIT to see who will move on to the second round.
Memphis Earns Three-Seed in NIT
Memphis had a successful season. They went 21-13 overall, and 11-7 in conference play. They needed a conference championship win to ensure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They were able to get the first two by double-digits, but could not get past Houston. This earned them a three-seed in the NIT to take on San Diego. This was the fifth straight season that the Tigers missed out on the big dance. Jeremiah Martin led the team scoring 19.6 points per game. Offensively, the Tigers were strong. They scored 80.6 points per game which was 26th nationally. They did not play the best defense which caused them to lose some tough games.

Head coach Penny Hardaway did a great job with this Tigers’ team. Memphis will be a force next season thanks to a strong recruiting class led by James Wiseman. Memphis landed the number one overall recruit thanks to Hardaway being his AAU coach. Wiseman also hails from Memphis. As for this season, they will be a three-seed in the NIT looking to win a tournament.
San Diego Makes WCC Run
San Diego finished near the bottom of the West Coast Conference. This was a little bit of a surprise given that they are a sneaky good team. They showed that in their conference tournament. The Toreros won their first game by 20 over Portland. They went on to defeat Santa Clara by 17, and BYU in blow out fashion to advance to the semifinals. Just one game away from the championship game, San Diego was tripped up by Saint Mary’s who eventually went on to win the entire thing. San Diego will enter the NIT as a six seed, but could make a run to win the whole thing. They have the kind of talent that is made for tournament settings.

Isaiah Piniero was on full display in the conference tournament. He scored double-figures in every game with his best game coming against BYU with 27 points and 12 rebounds. He averaged 19.1 points per game on the season. The Toreros were middle of the pack in scoring with 72.3 points per game. Defensively, they allowed 68 per game. They struggled in conference play, but they are clicking at the right time. San Diego will be a surprise team in the NIT.

Full-Game Side Bet
San Diego is going to surprise people. They beat some talented teams handily in their conference tournament, and are playing their best ball of the season. These teams are similar ATS. The Toreros are 18-16 while Memphis is 18-15-1. San Diego has covered four of their last six games. Memphis has had a good season, but they are ultimately one year away. In this year’s NIT, San Diego will fair better. They will be underdog in this game, but do not be surprised if they win this game outright.
Prediction: San Diego +5.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Both of these teams have played more games under than over this season. San Diego has played 20 unders out of 35 games. This is a number that is higher than expected. Because of that, the teams will not score enough to get there. This will not be a game played in the 80’s, but lower 70’s. The last six games for Memphis have been under while four of the last five for San Diego have been under. This will be another low scoring affair on day one of the NIT.
Prediction: Under 152.5
