The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Purdue Boilermakers will meet at the XL Center this Thursday as both teams will be looking for another victory. Old Dominion is 26-8 this season after beating Western Kentucky in its last game. Meanwhile, Purdue is 23-9 after losing to Minnesota in its last game. Now, both teams will be looking to improve on their respective records in this one.
Old Dominion Wins Its Conference Tournament
This season, Old Dominion looked to get over the hump and to qualify for the NCAA tournament by winning its conference tournament. So far this season, the team achieved that goal after it avenged last season’s loss to Western Kentucky by beating the Hilltoppers in the championship game of this season’s conference tournament. As a result, the team enters this NCAA tournament with a 26-8 record. In addition, the team has won ten of its last 12 games and will be looking for a serious upset in its first tournament appearance since 2011.
Old Dominion is led by senior guard B.J. Stith who has been amazing this season. This season, he is currently leading the team in scoring with 16.9 points per game along with 7.4 rebounds. However, he has been extremely inefficient from the floor this season as he is only shooting 41.3% from the floor. He is also coming into this game off of a 13 point performance on 4-12 shooting in the team’s last game.
Coach Jones stated that he has a greater appreciation for the team’s accomplishments due to his ongoing battle with cancer.
“As you get older, and then throw in the health stuff, you know, I think a greater appreciation, just for normal everyday occurrences. And then when you have an achievement and accomplishment like this for our basketball team, I think it becomes even more special,” Jones said.
Purdue Loses Two Of Its Last Three
This season, Purdue has been a tad worse than previous years as the team has won 23 of its first 32 games. However, the team still managed to win 16 of its 20 games in conference play as the team looked to get on a hot streak before the NCAA tournament began. However, the opposite occurred as the team lost two of its last three games including a loss in the conference tournament to Minnesota. In that game, Purdue’s offense struggled as the team only scored 73 points while shooting just 25% from the three-point line. With an elite defense up next, one can expect Purdue’s offense to struggle once again.
The Purdue Boilermakers are led by junior guard Carsen Edwards who has been unbelievable in his college career. Last season, Edwards was great as he averaged 18.5 points per game along with 3.8 rebounds. However, Edwards has somehow played even better this season as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 23.0 points per game along with 3.5 rebounds. Edwards has an NBA future and he will be the most talented player on the court in this game. Look for him to try taking this game over.
Coach Painter stated that he wants his players to be aggressive on offense instead of simply settling for outside shots.
“More than anything, no matter who we play is trying to have a balance, just not living and dying on your perimeter, shooting all of the time. You got to be able to get the basketball to the rim in some capacity. Whether those are drives or post-ups, offensive rebounds or getting into transition a little bit more. I think it’s important for us to be able to sprinkle our threes in instead of dominating with our threes,” Painter said.
- Boilermakers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- Boilermakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Monarchs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Overall, I think that Purdue is the better overall team but there is no way that it should be favored by 13 points in this game. Purdue has the size and length to bother Old Dominion but both teams are outside of the top-130 in field goal percentage. Old Dominion loves to slow the pace of play down and I simply think that Purdue will be unable to score enough points to cover this number. Purdue has also struggled away from home this season so I think this game will be extremely competitive throughout. Give me the underdog plus the points in this one.
Prediction: Old Dominion +13
Full-Game Total Pick
This is a matchup in which both teams play solid defense which should lead to a lower-scoring game. Old Dominion does not possess many offensive weapons so Purdue should be able to play well defensively. Meanwhile, Old Dominion’s guards are extremely inefficient from the floor so I expect them to struggle as well. Both teams should be able to slow the pace down and dominate on the defensive end of the ball. Give me the under as a result.
Prediction: Under 128
