Texas Tech Red Raiders at TCU Horned Frogs
When and Where: Thursday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, TX
The Red Raiders are coming off a tough loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Sept. 29. Texas Tech had won three straight games before the narrow defeat. TCU won its last game after losing back-to-back games by a total of 27 points to Ohio State and Texas. It’s been a while since the Horned Frogs played as they had a bye last weekend. Last year, TCU won this game on the road, 27-3 over Texas Tech.
Texas Tech should be able to score some points against TCU, granted the Red Raiders handle the ball better than two weekends ago against West Virginia. The Red Raiders two quarterbacks, Jett Duffey and Alan Bowman, combined for three interceptions. Bowman, the starter, has thrown for 1680 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. The freshman has been mostly terrific, although West Virginia was effective against him. Duffey gives the Red Raiders a running threat at quarterback. He’s carried the ball 21 times for over 160 yards on the season in only two games played. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s used again Thursday.
Dakota Allen, a senior, managed 12 tackles, including half a sack, against West Virginia at the end of September. The Red Raiders don’t impress that much defensively, but they did flash in a win over Oklahoma State Sept. 22. The Cowboys managed only 17 points as the Red Raiders defense were efficient. Eli Howard, a sophomore, has 2.5 games over his past two games combined. The Red Raiders are allowing 31 points per game. TCU should be able to score some points against Texas Tech.
Shawn Robinson has been relatively efficient this year. He did suffer a shoulder injury in the last second win over Iowa State, but he’ll play Thursday night. Head coach Gary Patterson said, however, he might not start. Robinson has thrown for seven touchdowns to six interceptions. He completed 72 percent of his passes in a win over Iowa State. The Horned Frogs have a balanced rushing attack. Sewo Olonilua has averaged only 4.5 yards this year compared to 5.2 yards last season. He’s been getting more volume, however. The Horned Frogs have received tremendous help from wide out Jalen Reagor. Reagor has 29 catches for 359 yards and two touchdowns.

TCU has been solid defensively, allowing just over 20 points per game. The Horned Frogs were terrific defending Iowa State, allowing only 79 yards passing. TCU really upped its defensive effort after struggling against Texas and Ohio State in back-to-back losses. The Horned Frogs received a nice boost from Garret Wallow in the win over Iowa State, finishing with 11 tackles and a sack. The Horned Frogs struggled against the high-powered Buckeyes offense. It could struggle against a high-powered Texas Tech attack.
- Horned Frogs are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Horned Frogs are 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- Horned Frogs are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 conference games.
- Red Raiders are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games.
- Red Raiders are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.
- Red Raiders are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS loss.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Both teams should be well-rested. It’s unclear how much Robinson will play with his shoulder injury, but he should be able to have some success against Texas Tech’s inferior defense. The Red Raiders, however, should be able to make things real interesting. Texas Tech has a dynamic offense that’ll be a big-time challenge for TCU.
Prediction: Texas Tech +7
Full-Game Total Pick
It’s easy to go on the over in a Big 12 matchup, especially featuring Texas Tech. The Red Raiders should be able to score at least 30 points. TCU only scored 17 in its last game, but the Horned Frogs play a relatively weak defense in Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs should be able to score.
Prediction: Over 64
