Charlotte 49ers vs. FIU Panthers
NCAAF: October 12, 2019 at 4:00 PM EST
Charlotte has played three good teams and two bad teams, and they killed the bad teams and were crushed by the good ones. They have lost their last two games by a combined score of 97-37 and one was facing top-ranked Clemson. While the 49ers have a good rushing offense the same cannot be said about their passing offense and their defense is giving up an average of nearly 40 ppg.
FIU has won two of their last three games and is coming off a shutout win over a one-win UMASS team, but they are already 0-2 in Conference USA play.
The Panthers are not a high scoring team and while their defense has only given up an average of 24.4 ppg that is a little misleading. In two of their three losses they gave up at least 42 points and while in their two wins they only gave up 17 point that was facing FCS New Hampshire and a weak UMASS team.
Last season at Charlotte FIU beat the 49ers 42-35.
Get back to the runThe strength of the Charlotte team is their rushing offense, but they were held to 54 rushing yards in their last game, which was a 45-27 loss to FAU. Even in the loss to Clemson in their previous game they rushed for 153 yards. Benny LeMay has rushed for 478 yards on the season averaging 6.4 yards per carry and he had his fewest yards (46) and fewest carries (11) of the season in the loss to FAU. Three other players for the 49ers have at least 148 rushing yards and the 49ers need to get back to the ground game facing an FIU run defense that only ranks 97th in the nation in run defense.
Chris Reynolds leads the Charlotte offense and has passed for 838 yards with 10 TD and five INT this season. After seven TD and two INT in his first three games, he has three TD and three INT in his last two games. Three players for the team have over 200 receiving yards led by Cameron Dollar with 256 receiving yards.
Which rushing defense will show up?FIU has struggled against the run this season and while they held UMASS to only 28 rushing yards in their 44-0 win over them in their last game they gave up 275 rushing yards in their previous game. James Morgan leads the Panthers and their 89th ranked passing offense and he has a TD to INT ratio of 5:2 and has passed for 890 yards. The team has five players that have at least 108 receiving yards led by Austin Maloney, who is averaging 21.2 yards per catch. Anthony Jones is the team leader with 293 rushing yards and after failing to rush for over 52 yards or average four yards per carry in his first four games he rushed for 115 yards averaging 5.8 yards per carry in the win over UMASS.
Charlotte only ranks 111th in the nation defending the run but 21st defending the pass. They have given up 471 rushing yards in their last two games and look to get a big dose of the ground game in this conference matchup.
The FIU Panthers are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall
The Charlotte 49ers are:
- 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record
- 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS loss
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Charlotte has played two pretty good teams in a row and was crushed by both of them. This one is a tough call, as both are 2-3 and each beat UMASS as well as beating an FCS team. Charlotte lost to FIU last season at home and they will return the favor this season on the road. The 49ers may not get the W in this game, but in a close one they will, at least, cover the spread getting five points against a Panthers team that is 0-2 in Conference USA play.
Prediction: PICK Charlotte
Full-Game Total Pick
I see this game being played out like the one last season between these teams in a close scoring and high scoring game. Each team has had issues giving up a lot of points and each will give up quite a few in this Conference USA showdown. Look for both teams to have big games on the ground and to light up the scoreboard and because of that take the Over in what promises to be a shootout.
Prediction: PICK Over
