Florida State Seminoles vs Clemson Tigers

Where: Memorial Stadium, Clemson South Carolina

When: Saturday, October 12, 2019, 3:30 pm ET

We have the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the house and we have a terrific matchup when the Florida State Seminoles travel to South Carolina to take on the #2 ranked Clemson Tigers in an important conference clash. This will be the 33rd meeting between the two ACC schools with the Seminoles holding a 20-12 edge in their head to head history.

Florida State enters this game with a 3-2 record and is 2-1 in the ACC this season. Clemson has a perfect 5-0 mark and is 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference thus far this season.

Florida State Two Quarterback Strategy Against Clemson

The Seminoles are trying to get their program back on the national radar and have won two straight games including last week’s 31-13 home thumping over the NC State Wolfpack. Senior quarterback Alex Hornibrook threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns but was sacked eight times on the day. Sophomore wide receiver Tamorrian Terry grabbed five passes for 77 receiving yards and two touchdowns and junior running back Cam Akers rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown to lead the Seminoles to their second ACC win of the season.

Clemson ranks fifth in the country with 255.2 total yards of offense allowed per game. The Tigers allow 104 rushing yards and 150.4 passing yards per game this season with 19 sacks and five interceptions and senior safety K’Von Wallace has the Tigers lone pick-six this season.

Hornibrook has a daunting task before him against a strong Clemson defense and has thrown for 571 yards and five touchdowns over his two games as the starting quarterback since taking over for sophomore quarterback James Blackman. The fifth-year senior transfer from the University of Wisconsin hasn’t thrown an interception but has been sacked eight times this season and will have to deal with the Tigers' constant pressure they put on quarterbacks. The offensive line will have to step up and protect Hornibrook otherwise he’s going to be spending plenty of this game on his back.

The Seminoles boast seven players with over 100 receiving yards this season led by Terry with 384 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore wideout Keyshawn Helton has 232 receiving yards and three touchdowns, sophomore wide receiver Ontaria Wilson has 181 receiving yards and a touchdown and junior wide receiver D.J. Matthews has 137 receiving yards and a touchdown for the Seminoles this season.

It will be difficult to run the ball against Clemson on Saturday and Florida State will look to Akers to hopefully make a dent in the stout Tigers rushing defense. Akers has rushed for 582 yards and seven touchdowns with an additional 108 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns this season. Florida State will also look to sophomore running back Khalan Laborn to put in work and he’s responded this season with 84 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Clemson Narrowly Defeats North Carolina

Clemson is undefeated this season and coming off a bye week. Their last game was a 21-20 road win over a pesky North Carolina Tarheels football team. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 206 yards and a touchdown with an additional 45 rushing yards and a touchdown and junior wide receiver Tre Higgins caught six balls for 129 receiving yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Travis Etienne led the Tigers rushing attack with 67 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tigers to their fifth victory of the season.

Florida State allows 447 yards of offense per game and that could be problematic against the potent Clemson offense. The Seminoles allow 144.8 rushing yards and 302 passing yards per game this season with 17 sacks and four interceptions this season.

Lawrence should be licking his chops at the prospect of playing a leaky defense like Florida State and has thrown for 1131 passing yards with eight touchdowns, five interceptions and has suffered three sacks this season. Lawrence has rushed for an additional 100 yards and four touchdowns this season and the Clemson faithful will be looking for a big game from the young gunslinger Saturday afternoon.

Clemson has three receivers with over 100 receiving yards this season and is led by Higgins and his 505 receiving yards and three touchdowns followed by sophomore wide receiver Justyn Ross with 218 receiving yards and one touchdown and junior wideout Amari Rodgers has 139 receiving yards and two touchdowns this season for Clemson.

The Tigers boast three running backs with over 100 rushing yards led by Etienne with 462 rushing yards and five touchdowns this season. Also putting in work is sophomore running back Lyn-J Dix with 240 rushing yards and three touchdowns and freshman running back Chez Mellusi has rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Rating:

Both teams are coming off bye weeks and plenty of extra time for the players to heal and an extra week to prepare for this game. The spread is a big one but I think Clemson still covers it. Lawrence has just one 300 plus yards passing day this season and has a great chance to do so at home against a Seminoles defense allowing over 300 passing yards per game. Look for Etienne to also have a huge day against the Seminoles leaky rushing defense.

Florida State has two quarterbacks that can both sling it but are up against a strong Clemson defense that knows how to stop teams defensively and also how to get to quarterbacks. The Seminoles can't afford another eight sack day as they allowed two weeks ago and the offensive line will be under the gun against the Tigers defense.

I'm laying the wood and looking for Clemson to rout Florida State.

Prediction: Clemson -27

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

This might be my favorite play of the day on Saturday. I think Clemson is going to hang 50 points on Florida State and I also believe the Seminoles are good for three touchdowns and I think that a total of 60.5 points is too low. It's going to be a perfect day weather-wise and I suspect these two talented offenses are going to try and put on a show. I do see the Clemson defense stopping the Seminoles the majority of the time and I also don't see how the Seminoles are going to stop Lawrence and the Tigers. I saw the following trends I think might be helpful on Saturday.

Prediction: Over 60.5
