Georgia State Panthers vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
NCAAF: October 12, 2019 at 5:00 PM EST
This is a big early-season Sun Belt showdown between a couple of 3-2 teams. Georgia State snapped their two-game losing streak in their last game, which was a 52-38 win over Arkansas State and their first conference win.
The Panthers have a high scoring offense but a defense that has given up a ton of points and ranks 120th in the nation.
Coastal Carolina was thumped in their last game and they are still looking for their first conference win. They had won three in a row before their last game, which was a 56-37 loss to Appalachian State. The Chanticleers are led by a rushing offense that ranks 21st in the nation putting up an average of 226.8 rushing yards per game. Last season at Georgia State the Chanticleers beat the Panthers 37-34.
Coastal Carolina has failed to cover the spread in their last five Sun Belt games.
Can the Panthers light it up again? After scoring 44 points in two losses Georgia State, put up 52 points and 722 total yards in their last game. Can they do it again? Coastal Carolina does rank 19th in the nation on overall defense, but they gave up 56 points in their last game and before that have pretty bad offenses in Kansas, Norfolk, and UMASS. The Panthers are led by their run game and Tra Barnett and duel-threat QB Dan Ellington have combined for 781 rushing yards this season. Barnett has rushed for at least 127 yards in two of his last three games and will face a CC run defense that gave up 184 rushing yards in the loss to Appalachian State.
Ellington has passed for 1,228 yards this season with a TD to INT ratio of 12:2 and in his last two games has passed for over 500 yards with four TD and one pick. Cornelius McCoy and Sam Pinckney each have at least 312 receiving yards and they are each averaging over 12 yards per catch.
Get back to the runCoastal Carolina is averaging 226.8 rushing yards per game, but in the loss in their last game only rushed for 154 yards. They will look to get CJ Marable more involved, as he leads the Chanticleers in rushing yards and had gone for 100+ yards in three straight games before going for 95 in the last game. Fred Payton has 910 yards on the season under center and while he has six TD he also has six INT. CC is a run-first team that had to air it out after being down 35-21 at the half and if Payton has to carry the offense it is an advantage for Georgia State.
Jaivon Heiligh leads Coastal Carolina with 236 receiving yards with no other player on the team with more than 185. The Chanticleers will be facing a Georgia State run defense that only ranks 118th in the nation, so they will look to pound the rock early and often.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are:
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games
- 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record
- 0-5 ATS in their last 5 conference games
The Georgia State Panthers are:
- 2-0-2 ATS in their last 4 games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Georgia State has played a tougher schedule and they are coming off their first conference win. They shocked Tennessee on the road in their season opener and they will move the ball in this game after racking up over 700 total yards in their last game. CC has good stats on D but were beat up in their last game and in their previous three games played weak teams. The Panthers have struggled on defense on the season and while they may not get the win, I think they will, they will cover the spread in this Sun Belt showdown.
Prediction: Georgia State
Full-Game Total Pick
Most of the betting trends for both teams point to the Over in this game. There is no need to buck that trend, especially since Georgia State scored 52 points in their last game and Coastal Carolina gave up 56 points. This will be a high scoring game, which is why the total is posted high, but still the Over is the way to go for this Sun Belt matchup.
