Memphis Tigers vs. Temple Owls Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 10-12-2019
On Saturday afternoon, the Memphis Tigers and Temple Owls will do battle in this American Athletic Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on ESP2.
Tigers On The RiseThe Memphis Tigers are now ranked 23rd in the college football rankings and they will try to continue to climb the ladder. Three of their five games played have been blowouts and they have scored 40 plus points in three games as well. The defense does give up good chunks of points, but the Tigers know how to respond well. Last week, they beat LA-Monroe 52-33. Memphis scored throughout the game and quarterback Brady White went 15 for 23, for 249 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
Here is what head coach Mike Norvell said about the win over LA-Monroe:
"That was a good offense, but we did enough things good to win that game," Norvell said.
Memphis has been great on both sides of the ball. The defense is third in the nation in passing defense. Also, the defensive line is awesome at getting tackles for a loss and really good at getting to the quarterback fast. The Tigers have been great at balancing their playing style on offense and defense. The Tigers like to run the ball and be in control of the game. The short pass works very well for the Tigers and it is a key play in their offensive game. They will own the time of possession and look for running back Kenneth Gainwell to have another strong game.
Temple Looking For An Upset WinThe Temple Owls have looked very sharp this season. They have had a couple blowout wins and an impressive 20-17 win over Maryland. The Owls defense has been solid for four out of five games and they look ready for the Tigers challenge. Last week, the Owls beat East Carolina 27-17. They had a good second half on defense and quarterback Anthony Russo went 23 for 34, for 208 yards, and one touchdown.
Here is what Temple head coach Rod Carey had to say about their upcoming game against Memphis:
“We love playing at the Linc [Lincoln Financial Field], our guys, and in front of our fans and our families. There’s certainly excitement around it. Memphis is a really good ballclub. It’s not just that they’re ranked. You turn on the film and you see really good football players, really well-coached and dynamic and explosive.”
The Owls have also been great on both sides of the ball. Their passing defense should get enough stops to hang with the Tigers. They are allowing just 166.8 yards per game in the air to rank 10th in the nation. The Temple defense can go back and forth with how efficient they play, but they have been pretty solid, as of late. Also, Temple's defense is awesome at stopping those big, third down plays. They rank fourth in the nation in 3rd down percentage defense at just 24.4%. Getting those stops can be a huge momentum swing. The Owls play better at home and will get production out of the passing game.
- Owls are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.
- Tigers are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games in October.
- Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Both of these teams have a strong passing defense going for them. This will make the game go pretty slow because it will be tough at times to move the ball up the field. The Tigers have a solid offense and should have no problem getting on some hot stretches in this game. The Owls can't play a shootout type of game and that is the way Memphis likes to do things. The Tigers are a balanced team and love to rush as much as possible. The Owls are not as flashy offensively and Russo makes more mistakes than good plays. Sure Temple has a tough defense, but sometimes that can't even save a team.
Prediction: Memphis Tigers -6
Full-Game Total Pick
This game will go under because the last two meetings between these teams playing at Temple went under. Plus, both defenses can be rock solid at times. The Tigers do give up a lot of points, but they shouldn't have to worry about a inconsistent Temple offense. The Owls usually put up around 20 or so points, while the Tigers have tallied 35 or more in four out of five games this season. The Temple defense will bring that number down a bit, but not that much. The Owls can keep this game competitive, if they keep the score low. It won't be easy, but they will keep interesting in the first half. Memphis will breakthrough in the second half and win 28-17.
Prediction: Under 50.5
