Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders vs. Florida Atlantic Owls Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 10-12-2019
On Saturday afternoon, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders and Florida Atlantic Owls will do battle in this Conference USA matchup. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Blue Raiders Trying To Build Off Of Last Weeks WinThe Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders have been all over the place this season. In Week 1, the Blue Raiders were blown out by Michigan. They responded with a blowout win against TN State. Then they were blown out by Duke and #17 Iowa. However, last week they were able to recover and get a 24-13 win over Marshall. It was a close game and the Blue Raider defense hung on and shutdown Marshall in the second half. Quarterback Asher O'Hara went 17 for 30, for 261 yards, and one touchdown.
Here is what head coach Rick Stockstill had to say about the upcoming game against Florida Atlantic:
"We've got a big challenge ahead of (us) this week," MTSU coach Rick Stockstill said. "Florida Atlantic is (a) really good football team whose two losses at that time came against two top-15 schools in Ohio State and Central Florida. They've won their last three games and have scored a ton of points.
The Blue Raiders don't do that much when it comes to third down plays. They struggle to convert on third downs on offense and can't get that big stop on defense. Their biggest problem is the defensive line. This team struggles to handle any opponents running game. They always seem to be playing from behind. The Blue Raiders struggle with time of possession and can't control much of anything. O'Hara will need to be a one man show for his team to stay in the game.
Owls Looking For Third Straight Blowout WinThe Florida Atlantic Owls are flying high right now. After getting blown out by Ohio State and UCF, they have responded with a scoring frenzy. The Owls have scored 41 plus points in each of their last three games. This scoring has given them two easy wins and they just had a bye week. So, this team is confident with the ball and well-rested. Two weeks ago, the Owls beat Wagner 42-7. The Owls defense shut out Wagner for three quarters, while the offense scored throughout the game. Quarterback Chris Robison went 25 for 36, for 379 yards, and five touchdowns.
Here is what head coach Lane Kiffin had to say about his team coming out of the bye week:
"We got back to work today with practice. (We) got a little bit of a head start last week. We have been pretty beat up since the first two games, especially at DB and running back., so hopefully, we will start to get healthier. The bye week coming at a good time, from that standpoint. Playing the defending divisional champs, and this has been, before we got here if I recall (MT had) eight or nine straight wins or something like that. We got the good win two years ago and screwed up last year, so we are doing all we can to get it back on track."
The Owls have a great passing attack. They will be able to push the Blue Raiders secondary back. This team is also good at the pass rush and they take care of the football. FAU doesn't turn the ball over that much. The Owls have some talent to work with and look for Robison to have another great day in the endzone. FAU pushes the ball down field with ease and all the passing opportunities, should open up some ground chances as well.
Florida Atlantic is:
- Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference games.
- Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
Middle Tennessee State is:
- Blue Raiders are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- Blue Raiders are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Blue Raiders are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
At first the Owls defense will have some trouble slowing down the Blue Raiders offense. However, FAU will make adjustments and break free in this game. The Blue Raiders defense will start to struggle and the Owls will be passing right and left, and running where they want to go. The Owls have a good enough ground game to really open things up. The FAU defensive line has been okay and that will be good enough for them in this game. The offense will make up for the slightly below average defense. FAU will be fired up, well rested, and ready to keep the momentum going.
Prediction: Florida Atlantic Owls -10.5
Full-Game Total Pick
This game will go under because both of these teams know how to get on a scoring binge, but sometimes the Blue Raiders offense can go flat. This will be an interesting game because the Owls can score a lot, but they can also let teams come back into the game. Middle Tennessee State will have their fair share of good scoring drives, but they will be mostly trying to stay in the game. If O'Hara is shut down, then there goes most of your scoring. The Owls at least have depth to work with and tons of momentum. Sure FAU has been blown out a few times as well, but they have really learned from those games. FAU wins 35-24.
Prediction: Under 63.5
