The North Texas Mean Green have had their fair share of struggles through the first five games of the season, having dropped three contests. The Mean Green are coming off a lopsided 46-25 loss at home against the Houston Cougars.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles have moved through their first five games with a bit more success, having won three out of their first five games. The Golden Eagles are coming off an encouraging win at home against the UTEP Miners in 31-13 showing, grabbing their second win in the last three contests.
It sets up what should be an entertaining contest between these two teams looking to build mid-season momentum.
Mean Green struggling to find successThe Mean Green have struggled through the first five games of the season, which has seen them drop three out of their last four contests since grabbing a win in the season opener. Outside of a win against the UTSA Roadrunners, North Texas has struggled to find any fluidity on the field with their defense being at the forefront of their shortcomings. The Mean Green are currently tied for 97th giving up 30.4 points per contest along with 102nd against the run, and 27th against the pass. Their issues defensively have seen them give up 40-plus points twice while their numbers may be a little more inflated then where they should be given the blowout win over an overmatched UTSA team. It has been a sluggish start to the year that has had the cushion of a one-sided win over a lesser opponent in the Roadrunners.
Meanwhile, they had dependable production from their offense, being a capable unit that has helped offset their defensive struggles a bit. Senior quarterback Mason Fine has thrown for 1,291 yards with 11 touchdowns to three interceptions. Fine has thrown for 300 yards three times while recording multiple touchdown passes all but once so far this season. They have also received strong production from sophomore running back Tre Siggers, recording 480 rushing yards on 64 carries with four touchdowns. Siggers has tallied more than 80 rushing yards in each of the four games that he has played with two 100 rushing yard performances to his name. If the Mean Green hope to have a chance to best Southern Mississippi, they need their offense to lead the charge on the road.
Southern Miss looking to build on momentumUnlike the Mean Green, the Golden Eagles have had more promising success in the 2019 season with their offense leading the way. They have been able to grab wins two out of their last games with their lone loss being against the Alabama Crimson Tide. They have shown to have a formidable offense away from that game, posting 30 or more points in both of their wins over the last three weeks. They have been among the more productive offenses in the nation, led by their passing attack that averages 313.2 per game despite the team averaging 27.6 points per contest. Junior quarterback Jack Abraham has provided stable play under center as he has passed for 1,515 yards with nine touchdowns to four interceptions. He has passed for more than 230 yards in four out of the first five games played with his lone porous performance coming against Alabama.

Abraham is coming off a strong outing against UTEP where he passed for 351 yards on 19-of-28 completed passes with three touchdowns. He was the difference in the contest guiding the Golden Eagles to a comfortable win at home. Southern Miss has also had strong production from senior wide receiver Jordan Mitchell, who has hauled in 22 catches for 369 receiving yards with three touchdowns. Mitchell has scored a touchdown in three out of the last four games while registering at least three catches in three of the four games that he has played. The Golden Eagles offense should be able to take advantage of the Mean Green's lackluster defense by putting forth another strong offensive performance to guide them to a second straight win at home.
- Southern Miss is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games played in Week 7.
- North Texas is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
- North Texas is 1-5 ATS in their last six conference games.
- North Texas is 1-5 ATS in their last six games in October.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
It's simply too difficult to look past the Mean Green's defensive struggles this season as that has weighed them down. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles offense has lifted off in the last few weeks, especially with Abraham coming off his best performance of the season. It will be a close contest, but Southern Miss will grab their second straight win.
Prediction: Southern Miss -3
Full-Game Total Pick
Although the Mean Green have had their struggles defensively, their offense has shown to be a formidable unit. This sets up what could be a game that features plenty of offensive fireworks, with Fine and Abraham leading the charge. It's a contest that should be dictated by the offenses rather than the play on the other side of the ball.
Prediction: Over 58.5
