We have Southeastern Conference (SEC) tackle football to discuss for Saturday afternoon when the #2 ranked LSU Tigers visit Starkville for an SEC matchup with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. This is the 110th meeting between the two schools with LSU leading the way with a 70-36-3 record.
The Tigers are undefeated this season with a 2-0 SEC record and knocked off #7 ranked Florida at home last weekend by a score of 42-28. The Bulldogs are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the SEC and coming off a 20-10, week seven road loss to Tennessee.
LSU 2-0 in SEC This SeasonThe #2 ranked LSU Tigers remained in the land of the unbeaten with a convincing week seven victory over the #7 ranked Florida Gators. Senior quarterback Joe Burrow threw for 293 yards with three touchdowns and senior wideout Van Jefferson hauled in eight passes for 73 yards and a pair of scores to lead the Tigers to their second SEC victory and sixth overall win of the season.
The Bulldogs allow 394 yards per game and 163.3 rushing yards and 230.6 passing yards per contest. Mississippi State has six interceptions with a pick-six from junior linebacker Willie Gay Jr and has recorded 10 sacks this season.
Burrows has been outstanding this season, throwing for 2157 yards with 25 touchdown passes and three interceptions. Burrows has been sacked nine times and has rushed for an additional 105 yards and two trips to the end zone.
LSU has five players with over 100 receiving yards and is led by junior wideout Justin Jefferson and his 670 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has 578 receiving yards and eight touchdowns and sophomore wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr has 304 receiving yards and six touchdowns and will miss his third consecutive game with a foot injury.
Junior running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire leads the Tigers with 494 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, freshman running back Tyrion Davis-Price has rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns and freshman running back John Emory Jr has rambled for 116 yards and a pair of scores for the Tigers.
State Suffers Back to Back Road LossesMississippi State has lost two straight road games and dropped their week seven matchup with Tennessee by a score of 20-10. The Volunteers held the Bulldogs to just 267 total yards and sacked Bulldogs seven times and forced three interceptions on the day. MSU quarterback Tommy Stevens started out the day going 6-11 for 67 yards and a pair of interceptions and was benched in favor of freshman Garrett Schrader and it was all downhill after that for the Bulldogs.
The Tigers defense allows 316 total yards of offense this season with 91.83 rushing yards and 224.1 passing yards per game this season. LSU has recorded 15 sacks with six interceptions over their first six games of the season.
Schrader will be making the start Saturday against LSU and has thrown for 590 yards with three touchdown passes, two interceptions and has been sacked eight times this season and that could become problematic against the Tigers and its nearly three sacks per game.
The Bulldogs have four receivers with over 100 receiving yards and are led by junior wide receiver Osirus Mitchell and his 335 yards and four scores. Senior wideout Dedrick Thomas has 156 receiving yards and a touchdown, senior tight end Farrod Green has 114 receiving yards and senior wide receiver Stephen Guidry has 113 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns this season.
Junior running back Kylin Hill has been held to just 58 rushing yards over his last two games but has rushed for 609 yards with five scores this season and the Bulldogs really need to get him going on Saturday. Schrader has rushed for 374 yards and a pair of touchdowns and senior running back Nick Gibson has rushed for 62 yards and two scores this season.
- Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games.
- Bulldogs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss.
- Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight-up loss.
- Bulldogs are 24-6 ATS in their last 30 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
- Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
This is an SEC game and Mississippi State is very good at home and especially good at covering the spread and has covered six of seven at home. Burrows is fantastic and this Tigers team will likely win this game but Schrader can sling it a bit and he's good on his feet and that should keep the Bulldogs afloat in this game. The wild card is Hill and if he can penetrate the stout LSU rushing defense, the Bulldogs could maybe win this game like that should open passing opportunities for the Bulldogs.
I'm taking the points and playing the Bulldogs to cover in this matchup.
Prediction: Mississippi State +18 Points
Full-Game Total Pick
That's a high total and I don't see these two teams reaching that total. Neither defense is special but these SEC games are big games and home defenses usually rise to the challenge. LSU has been so good this year that a letdown of sorts has to eventually happen and I think that could happen against Mississippi State. I don't see the Bulldogs scoring more than three touchdowns and I see the Tigers scoring four touchdowns and roughly 49 points scored between the two in this game.
I'm going with the UNDER in this SEC matchup!!
Prediction: Under 61 Points
