Charlotte 49ers at Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
NCAAF: Saturday, October 20, 2018, Floyd Stadium, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 3:00 PM ET
The Charlotte 49ers bounced back from a couple of big defeats on the road with a comfortable win over Western Kentucky and they are now a win behind FIU and Marshall in the Conference USA standings. On the other hand, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders were on a fine run of two victories and were close to make it three in a row but they fell short to Florida Intl last week.
The 49ers scored season-high 40 points in a win over the Hilltoppers
Charlotte returned home following a two-game road trip on which they lost to UMass and UAB but the 49ers destroyed the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 40-14, thanks to an excellent display in the second half. The 49ers entered the tilt slowly and scored only nine points in the opening 30 minutes but exploded in the second half, while their defense held the visitors to just seven points. Charlotte was equally efficient through the air and on the ground, collecting 448 total yard, but the rushing defense was particularly pleasing as they limit the Hilltoppers to miserable 42 yards. The 49ers have the 6th best defense in the country when it comes to defending the ground as they are allowing 92.7 rushing yards per contest, so they will have a solid chance to keep the Blue Raiders to under 100 rushing yards on this one.
Freshman quarterback Chris Reynolds is completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 1181 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions for the 49ers. He failed to record a touchdown in a win over Western Kentucky as he threw for 119 yards but luckily for Charlotte, they secured an easy win even without Reynolds’ good performance.
The Blue Raiders dropped the lead in the fourth quarter and lost to the Golden Panthers
Middle Tennessee was very close to book their third consecutive victory as they had a 21-13 lead after the first three quarters but the Florida Intl Golden Panthers scored 11 unanswered points in the final quarter to get to a 24-21 win. Olin Cushion III intercepted Asher O’Hara’s pass in the end zone with 34 seconds left to prevent the Blue Raiders from getting the third win in a row, while Middle Tennessee’s defense let them down as they allowed even 311 passing yards and a couple of TD’s. On the other end, the Blue Raiders recorded only 142 yards through the air, which is way below their season average of 238.8 passing yards. Charlotte allows 237.2 yards per contest to the opposing receivers so the hosts must step up if they want to hurt the visitors through the air.
Stock: On QB Brent Stockstill's status: Not sure right now. We have six days so we will see.
— Middle Tennessee FB (@MT_FB) October 15, 2018
Senior quarterback Brent Stockstill is completing 67.7 percent of his passes for 1327 yards with ten touchdowns and three interceptions for the Blue Raiders. He suffered an injury in a loss to Florida Intl after throwing for 28 yards and Asher O’Hara came on but failed to impress as his late interception cost Middle Tennessee a victory.
- 2-7 ATS in their last nine games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
- 1-4 ATS in their last five games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game
- 6-1 ATS in their last seven games played in October
- 6-2 ATS in their last eight conference games
- 4-1 ATS in their last five games on turf
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Middle Tennessee won each of the previous three H2H encounters including the one at the Floyd Stadium, but with the status of Brent Stockstill still up in the air, I am not convinced the Blue Raiders can cope with Charlotte’s defense if their senior QB cannot feature here. Asher O’Hara proved to be not up to the task when it comes to critical situations and I believe that Stockstill’s potential absence will be a major boost for the visitors. The Blue Raiders might turn to the running game if their QB is not healthy but the 49ers are defending the ground excellently, so I don’t see the hosts winning this one.
Prediction: Charlotte 49ers +16.5 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
When it comes to the points, under is 6-1-1 in Blue Raiders last eight home games; under is 6-1-1 in Blue Raiders previous eight games following a straight up loss, while under is 7-1 in 49ers last eight games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game. If Stockstill sits out this one, the hosts will be forced to run the ball, which will likely lead to under.
Prediction: Under 48.5 (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
Charlotte didn’t get first to ten points in their two road games but this one could be different despite the favorite tag on the Blue Raiders, so I am going against the odds and I am backing the visitors to win the race to ten points.
Prediction: Race to 10 Points: Charlotte 49ers (+250)
Half-Time Side Pick
Middle Tennessee was up at halftime in only two of their six games and it’s obvious that they are playing better in the second 30 minutes, so I am backing the 49ers to put up a fight in the opening half and stay close to the hosts.
Prediction: Charlotte 49ers +9 (-110)
Half-Time Total Bet
The Blue Raiders are not playing very well in the first half thus far but that is not the case when they are playing in front of their own fans, and even though I don’t expect to see over in the end of the game, I am backing the rivals to combine for 25+ in the opening 30 minutes.
Prediction: Over 24.5 (-115)
Half-Time Prop Prediction
Backing the Blue Raiders to win both halves at -260 is not an attractive option, so I am going to upset the odds with an unorthodox selection with backing the hosts at halftime and the visitors to get away with a victory in the end.
Prediction: Double Result: Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders – Charlotte 49ers (+1800)
