Georgia Southern Eagles at New Mexico State Aggies

NCAAF: Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 4:00 PM EST

Georgia Southern has won three in a row and their only loss of the season came against powerhouse Clemson. However, they were less than impressive in their last game only beating Texas State 15-13 facing a Bobcats team that is only 1-5. The Eagles have a good defense and on offense they are led by a run game that ranks 9th in the nation averaging 256.7 rushing yards per game.

New Mexico State had their modest two-game win streak snapped in their last game as their defense was shredded.

They gave up 66 points and over 750 total yards and on the season the Aggies rank 126th in the nation out of 129 FBS teams in points allowed per game. Last season New Mexico State beat Georgia Southern and the Aggies are 4-0 ATS in their last four games against the Eagles.

Not the prettiest game

Georgia Southern was on the road in their last game beating Texas State 15-13 in a game that was far from pretty. The Eagles only had 215 yards of total offense, but they only gave up 242 yards and they forced two turnovers. To say the Eagles are not a great passing team would be an understatement, as they are only averaging 75.7 passing yards per game. In the Texas State game Shai Werts only passed for 51 yards with no TD and no INT and while rushing for 18 yards it took him 13 carries to do it. Wesley Fields rushed for 93 yards with a TD, but he only averaged 3.6 yards per carry.

Werts and Fields are tied for the team lead each with 472 rushing yards and each is averaging nearly five yards per carry. There is a good chance these two can pad their stats in this game facing a New Mexico State run defense that ranks 125th in the nation and that gave up 344 rushing yards in their last game.

Where is the defense?

New Mexico State was torched on defense in their last game where they were on the road and lost to Louisiana 66-38. The Aggies did have 406 total yards, which is not bad, but what is bad is that they gave up 759 yards and were torched in the air and on the ground. Josh Adkins passed for 315 yards with a TD and an INT and Jason Huntley led the team with 112 receiving yards. Even in the loss Huntley had a big game not only with 112 receiving yards, but he also rushed for 85 yards and had 176 yards on kickoff returns.

Adkins has passed for 686 yards with five TD and one INT in his last two games and Christian Gibson, who leads the team in rushing yards, had galloped for over 100 yards in two straight games before only going for 47 rushing yards in the bad loss to Louisiana.

The Aggies will be up against a Georgia Southern team that ranks 44th in the nation in pass defense and 56th in run defense. New Mexico State has to hope the Eagles play poorly like they did in their last game and if they don’t the Aggies don’t have much of a chance with the defense they have.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Georgia Southern is the pick for this non-conference game even though they were not impressive in their last game, are on the road, and giving double-digits in points. At home just can’t go with the Aggies, as they give up a ton of points. They will not be shut out in this game, but they will have trouble moving the chains while the Eagles will not. Georgia Southern will win this game and cover the spread heading home to end their Sun Belt season where they are unbeaten in conference play.

Prediction: PICK: Georgia Southern

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Ok, so Georgia Southern only scored 15 points in their last game, but they will put up more than that in this game facing a New Mexico State defense that is one of the worst in the nation. Take the Over in this non-conference game.

Prediction: PICK: Over

I dig every sport and the NFL is my favorite. My team is the Redskins and my 2nd favorite is whoever is playing the Cowboys! I am a great handicapper and if you don’t believe me just ask. I don’t just write about betting on games I actually bet on them and I have done well, which is why it is a good idea to follow my picks.
