UTSA Roadrunners at Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
NCAAF: Saturday, October 20, 2018, M. M. Roberts Stadium, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, 7:00 PM ET
The UTSA Roadrunners were in a fine form of three consecutive wins but failed to make it four in a row as they were well-beaten at home by Louisiana Tech. On the other hand, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles disappointed in their last two games as they scored just 20 points in the process and lost both.
The Roadrunners scored season-low three points in a heavy loss to the Bulldogs
UTSA was playing very well recently as they didn’t concede more than 21 points in three games that ended with victories but the Roadrunners’ offense let them down in the latest clash with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, losing 31-3. The Roadrunners were utterly inefficient on the ground as they recorded only 85 rushing yards on 23 carries but that wasn’t strange considering that they have one of the worst rushing offenses in the country that averages 99.9 yards per contest. Southern Mississippi is allowing 131.6 yards to the opposing runners so the visitors will not have such a good opportunity to do damage on the ground here.
Junior quarterback Cordale Grundy is completing 51.2 percent of his passes for 990 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions for the Roadrunners. He didn’t have the best of times in a big loss to the Bulldogs as he threw for 191 yards and an interception, which is exactly the same number the Golden eagles are allowing to the opposing quarterbacks, so Grundy could struggle again.
The Golden Eagles are hoping to avoid the third straight defeat
Southern Mississippi was entirely toothless in the offense against the North Texas Mean Green as they scored season-low seven points in a 30-7 loss. The Golden Eagles’ running game was inefficient once again as they collected just 50 rushing yards on 28 carries and despite the fact that they compensated poor running with 317 passing yards, Southern Mississippi still couldn’t hurt the Mean Green. The 13th best passing offense is averaging 318.6 yards per contest and they are facing the Roadrunners’ defense that allows 253.4 yards to the opposing receivers, so the hosts should add 250+ passing yards on this one.
Sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham is completing 70.5 percent of his passes for 1581 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions for the Golden Eagles. He had a fine game in a loss to North Texas as he recorded 318 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and even though Southern Mississippi failed to win, another 300+ yard performance will likely secure a victory for the hosts.
- 7-3 ATS in their last ten games played at home
- 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
- 6-1 ATS in their last seven games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
- 1-6 ATS in their last seven conference games
- 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a straight up loss
- 0-6 ATS in their last six games following a double-digit loss at home
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Southern Mississippi won two out of the previous four H2H encounters including the latest one, 31-29, while the Golden Eagles were victorious in the past meeting at the M. M. Roberts Stadium. The top 40 defense that allows 20.8 points per contest is facing one of the most inefficient offenses in the country that averages just 17.4 points, so I don’t think UTSA will be able to hurt the hosts, while they will likely be destroyed with the Golden Eagles’ passing game.
Prediction: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles -16.5 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
Considering the Roadrunners’ weak offense and the Golden Eagles’ sturdy defense, I don’t expect to see plenty of points despite the fact that the rivals produced for 60+ in the previous two H2H duels. Under is 11-4-1 in Golden Eagles last 16 games in October, while under is 5-0 in Roadrunners previous five games in October.
Prediction: Under 44.5 (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
Southern Mississippi won by 22-point difference the last time when these teams met at the M. M. Roberts Stadium, and the odds for the Golden Eagles’ win between 19 and 24 points are +425, so I am going with the hosts to repeat that performance on this one.
Prediction: Winning Margin: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 19-24 (+425)
Half-Time Side Pick
The Golden Eagles were up at halftime in each of their three home games thus far in the season, while UTSA trailed after the opening 30 minutes in two of their three road games, so I am backing the hosts to have a lead at halftime here.
Prediction: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles -9 (-110)
Half-Time Total Bet
Both UTSA and Southern Mississippi were involved in a couple of low-scoring first halves in their respective last two games, and considering that I am backing under at the end of this clash, I’m also backing under 23 points at halftime.
Prediction: Under 23 (-115)
Half-Time Prop Prediction
I am pretty convinced that the Golden Eagles will win both halves and even though the -280 odds are not great and far from being attractive, baking the hosts on double result could be a nice pick to add to your accumulator coupon.
Prediction: Double Result: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles – Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (-280)
