The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Texas State Bobcats will both be looking for a Mountain West conference victory when they play this Saturday afternoon at Romney Stadium. San Jose State enters this contest with a 1-8 record including a 24-9 defeat at the hands of Wyoming last week. Utah State enters this game on an eight-game winning streak including a blowout 56-17 victory against Hawaii last week.
Texas State Comes Off Of A Big Win Last Week
Texas State started the season looking to improve upon its 2-10 season last year. So far this season, the team has look slightly better but still has a losing record of 3-6. However, Texas State has been pretty competitive in some conference games against Sun Belt powerhouses. For example, Georgia Southern is currently 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference yet Texas State only lost to them by two points earlier in the season. With another elite Sun Belt team up next, Texas State better be up to the challenge.
Last week, the Bobcats managed to defeat Georgia State by a score of 40-31 as the team used a 20-0 third quarter to break the game open before cruising in the fourth quarter to a victory. The Bobcats had over 300 passing yards and overwhelmed the Panthers with its aerial attack. Look for the Bobcats to rely on it once more against a quality foe.
Texas State’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Willie Jones III who is having a solid season. This season, he has thrown for seven passing touchdowns and over 900 passing yards while only throwing two interceptions. However, Jones III is also adept at running the ball as he has rushed for a team-leading 391 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Jones III was tremendous in the team’s victory over Georgia State last week as he threw for two touchdown passes and 325 passing yards to get his team the victory. Unfortunately for him, Georgia State’s does not come close to Appalachian State’s defense. Jones III will need to play well if Texas State plans on keeping this game close.
Texas State’s offense currently ranks 106th in the country in points per game with 24.0 and is also averaging 196.2 passing yards per game which ranks 99th. Expect Texas State’s offense to struggle against an elite defense this Saturday.
Appalachian State Gets Its Star Quarterback Back
Appalachian State entered the season with the hopes of winning another Sun Belt conference title. So far this season, that goal does not look too likely to be achieved. The Mountaineers were on their way to having another great season unlike the team got upset by conference foe Georgia Southern a few weeks ago. The team was able to rally for the following week and to defeat Coastal Carolina but it might be too little too late.
Appalachian State’s offense is led by star quarterback Zac Thomas. This season, Thomas has thrown for 11 touchdowns and over 1,100 passing yards while throwing four interceptions. However, Thomas has also been a huge factor on the ground as he has also rushed for six touchdowns. Thomas is the key to the team’s success and he will try to take care of business on the road. It is important to note that Appalachian State’s only conference loss of the season came in a game where Thomas only played in the first drive of the game before leaving with an injury. That injury also prevented him from playing last week. Now that Thomas is healthy enough to play, look for him to have an impact.
- Bobcats are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games following a ATS win.
- Bobcats are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Bobcats are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win.
- Mountaineers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
- Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
This game consists of two extremely uneven teams in the Sun Belt as Appalachian State is simply in a different class than Texas State. The Mountaineers will have their star quarterback back for this one which should make all the difference. Appalachian State was ranked earlier this season and should be able to destroy this inferior foe on the road. I expect Appalachian State to win this game by at least three touchdowns so I think there is value with the favorite in this contest.
Prediction: Appalachian State -21
Full-Game Total Pick
I will lean to the over since Appalachian State will have its star quarterback back. Texas State has a below average defense and Appalachian State has a quality offense when it is healthy. The Mountaineers have the talent to put up 48 by themselves so I think the over is a good play. However, one does not know if Thomas is truly at 100% for the Mountaineers which is why I only lean towards the over.
Prediction: Over 48
