Charlotte 49ers at Marshall Thundering Herd
NCAAF: Saturday, November 10, 2018, Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington, West Virginia, 2:30 PM ET
The Charlotte 49ers are playing in hot and cold form and they failed to connect two victories this season, so the current 4-5 record is not such a big surprise. On the other hand, the Marshall Thundering Herd is playing better as they have a 5-3 record but they suffered a defeat following a pair of wins and they need to get a victory here in order to keep up the pace with FIU and Middle Tennessee State.
The 49ers scored season-low three points in a loss to the Volunteers
Charlotte defeated Southern Mississippi before they traveled to Tennessee to meet the Volunteers who kept them scoreless in three quarters and limited them to miserable three points in a 14-3 victory. The 49ers actually collected 244 total yards in opposite to the Volunteers’ 192 but the hosts displayed a fantastic defensive performance against one of the least efficient teams in the country. Charlotte is below 100 teams in college football when it comes to both passing and rushing offenses and they are facing a top 15 rushing defense that allows only 103.5 yards to the opposing runners, so the visitors will have a mountain to climb in order to avoid a loss here.
Senior quarterback Evan Shirreffs is completing 53.5 percent of his passes for 557 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions for the 49ers. Shirreffs had a horrible game in a loss to the Volunteers as he recorded 152 yards and an interception and even though Marshall is allowing 254.0 yards to the opposing receivers, it is hard to expect Charlotte’s QB to make an impact on this one.
The Thundering Herd fell short to the Golden Eagles
Marshall recorded a pair of wins but they failed to make it three in a row for the first time in this campaign as they suffered a tight 26-24 defeat to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The Thundering Herd never had a lead in this encounter but they were close to the hosts all the time; however, Isaiah Green’s touchdown pass to Artie Henry III with just bit more than a minute to go wasn’t enough to avoid a defeat. Marshall’s rushing game was disastrous as they recorded miserable 31 yards on 22 carries, which is way below their season average of 152.4 yards and they will not have easier job against the 3rd best defensive team in the country when it comes to defending the ground. The hosts will try to hurt the 49ers through the air where the visitors are weaker and are allowing 222.6 yards to the opposing receivers.
Freshman quarterback Isaiah Green is completing 54.1 percent of his passes for 1277 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Thundering Herd. Green ended the tilt with the Golden Eagles with 169 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, while he suffered a knee injury but will be able to perform on this one.
- 1-6 ATS in their last seven games played at home
- 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games played in November
- 6-0 ATS in their last six games after accumulating less than 275 total yards in their previous game
- 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall
- 5-1 ATS in their last six conference games
- 4-1 ATS in their last five games played in November
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Marshall won two out of the previous three H2H encounters but Charlotte won the latest clash at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The -14.5 spread seems a bit high considering Charlotte’s defense which is quite solid as the 49ers are allowing 24.8 points per contest, while the Thundering Herd is scoring 28.5 points per game. I am backing then hosts to get a win here, but I am going with the visitors to cover the spread and put up a fight on this one.
Prediction: Charlotte 49ers +14.5 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
The previous H2H clash produced only 17 points and even though I expect to see more points on this one, the team’s respective defenses are actually better than their offenses, so I am going with under. Also, under is 22-8 in Thundering Herd last 30 conference games, while under is 4-1 in 49ers previous five games in total.
Prediction: Under 41.5 (-110)
Full-Game Prop Bet
Charlotte suffered four consecutive defeats on the road but the last two were by 11 points or less, while Marshall is not quite impressive at home, so I am backing the visitors to stay close here. However, I am going with the Thundering Herd to win in the end but they will probably not destroy the opponents, so a win between seven and 12 points is a good bet to multiply your stake.
Prediction: Winning Margin: Marshall Thundering Herd 7-12 (+400)
Half-Time Side Pick
Marshall was up at halftime in three out of their previous four games, while Charlotte trailed after the opening 30 minutes in three of their last five games, so I am going with the hosts here. Still, the -7.5 spread might prove to be a tricky one as the hosts would need more than one touchdown in order to cover it, but I am backing them to have at least an 8-point lead at halftime.
Prediction: Marshall Thundering Herd -7.5 (-110)
Half-Time Total Bet
Charlotte’s defense on the road is much better than their offense and none of the previous three away games produced more than 21 points at halftime. Even though three of Marshall’s last four home games did produce 22+ points in the opening 30 minutes, I am going with under, considering that I am also backing under in the end.
Prediction: Under 21 (-105)
Half-Time Prop Prediction
Despite the fact that the 49ers are not losing by big margin on the road, I don’t think they will record their first away win on this one. Also, they are rather weak in the first 30 minutes, so I am backing the Thundering Herd to win both halves even though the -260 odds are not very attractive.
Prediction: Double Result: Marshall Thundering Herd – Marshall Thundering Herd (-260)
