The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are set to host Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night
Defensive issues hammering Seminoles
It has been nothing short of a topsy-turvy type of 2018 season for the Seminoles that has seen them go through their fair share of difficulties. Much of this has come in the last few weeks dropping three out of their last four games that includes all of those losses coming against ranked opponents in decisive manners. The most recent being a 47-28 drumming by North Carolina State on the road with them never truly contending in the contest. It has seen their struggles defensively ranking 85th in the country giving up 30.4 points per contest with the bulk of these issues coming from an utter lack of effectiveness against the pass being 120th in the country giving up 282.6 passing yards per contest.

This was the case against NC State with quarterback Ryan Finley passing for 240 yards and three touchdowns in the blowout win. It has been their Achilles heel that has hammered them throughout the year giving up 30 or more point six times including in each of the last three games. This has overshadowed their strength against the run ranking 17th in the country giving up just 111.1 yards per game. It has also overlooked their offensive attack that has been led by their passing game that ranks 23rd in the nation 283.2 yards per game. However, it hasn’t led to them putting up points on the board ranking 106th in the country with 23.8 points per contest. This lack of offensive production even with a potent passing game that looks to have taken another notch up with James Blackman coming off a strong outing against NC State throwing for 421 yards with four touchdown passes. If Florida State hopes to have a chance, it will have to see their defense step it up drastically.
Fighting Irish keeping magic season going
Notre Dame has put together an impressive season pushing forward that has seen them get plenty of balance on both sides of the ball. This has seen a significant uptick in their play offensively since the team made the transition offensively to quarterback Ian Book as he has thrown for 1,824 yards with 15 touchdowns to four interceptions. In each of his first six starts this year, he has thrown for more than 250 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes in each contest. Book is coming off a strong outing against Northwestern completing 22-of-34 passes for 343 yards with a pair of touchdown passes. Book has provided a tremendous amount of stability to the passing game that has made the Fighting Irish a potent offensive team scoring more than 30 points in four out of the last five games played.

This has seen wide receiver Miles Boykin step up as the primary receiving option with 40 receptions for 624 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Boykin has been the primary target for Book notching at least four receptions and 50 receiving yards in each of the last five games played. These two have helped push Notre Dame to hold the 35th-best passing attack in the nation while being 33rd with 33.7 points per contest. This should see the two have a big game against Florida State’s secondary that has struggled mightily against the pass this season. The table is set for Book to add another strong outing to what’s been a strong string of games since taking over as the starter.
- Fighting Irish are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
- Fighting Irish are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games.
- Fighting Irish are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- Seminoles are 2-8-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- Seminoles are 1-5-2 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Seminoles are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games on fieldturf.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Since Notre Dame inserted Book as the starter, the offense has taken off to the next level. It should continue with a matchup against a struggling Florida State team that has had issues with consistency all season long. This could quickly turn into a one-sided affair on Saturday night.
Prediction: Notre Dame -18
