South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Texas A&M Aggies 10
Where and when: Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, Saturday, 7:30 pm EST
The South Carolina Gamecocks will be in need of a win when they travel for an SEC matchup versus the Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, at 7:30 pm EST. In five meetings since 2014, the Aggies have won straight up in each contest versus South Carolina, including a 26-23 win in Columbia last season. They are, however, just 2-2-1 against the number in these contests.
With the likes of the LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, along with the Auburn Tigers, the Aggies are middle-of-the-pack within the SEC West division. In fact, Texas A&M are already 0-2 in losses to the Crimson Tide along with the Tigers this year with a road date with the Tigers in their season finale.
The Aggies are now bowl eligible with a blowout victory over the Roadrunners of UTSA last weekend, their third straight victory, overall. They now seek to keep their momentum going not only versus a team that they have dominated in recent meetings, but one that is also reeling in dropping three of their last four games. Important to note that Texas A&M is 3-3 ATS at home this year while going 1-3 in their last four.
The Gamecocks continue to hurt their chances at reaching a bowl game. After picking up a huge win on the road versus one of the best in the nation in the Georgia Bulldogs on October 12th, South Carolina has dropped three of four games. They compounded their problems by falling at home to a dangerous Appalachian State Mountaineers squad as 6.5-point favorites. With a road matchup versus a team that they have not had much success against in the Aggies along with a home finale versus in-state rival Clemson Tigers, there is not much hope for the Gamecocks making it to the postseason under coach Will Muschamp.
To make matters worse, the visitors have a laundry list of injuries including a groin injury for leading rusher Tavien Feaster along with leading receivers Bryan Edwards along with Shi Smith being day-to-day with hamstring and lower-body ailments.
Gamecocks continue on the downward spiralIn a game where neither team could get anything going early, the Mountaineers were sparked by a Ryan Hellinski pick-six in the second period which put Appalachian State up 13-6 last weekend. And while the Gamecocks outgained the Mountaineers 346-202, South Carolina was not able to maintain any type of consistency during the contest until a late touchdown pass from Hellinski to Edwards to bring USC to within 5 points. The freshman QB ended the day with over 300 yards, yet the rushing attack was nonexistent with a total of 21 yards (0.8 average per rush). This is a head-scratching statistic for a team in USC that is ranked 65th in the nation in gaining just under 170 yards per outing on the ground.
However, with a laundry list of players, particularly on offense, potentially not suiting up on Saturday, the Gamecocks may find it very difficult to find any creases versus an Aggies defense that has protected both the run and pass well in 2019.
For the record, the defense for the Gamecocks has not been bad this year. In fact, they are ranked 40th in stopping the run (137 yds per) while allowing a tad under 230 yards in the air to opponents. However, injuries have really hit this team hard on both sides of the ball and it is certainly beginning to show in their recent performances. Adding to the injured list, junior linebacker Damani Staley is questionable with a toe injury.
Aggies rolling on both sides of the ballMissing Staley at linebacker will certainly play into the offensive plans for Texas A&M as they are putting up 159 yards on the ground per game thanks to the production of freshman newcomer Isaiah Spiller, who scored three times in a win over the UTSA Roadrunners last weekend. Also, dual-threat QB Kellen Mond continues to keep defenses on their heels with an ability to not only find the open man, but to tuck the ball and scramble for what he can get, also.
In fact, the Aggies have been putting up huge numbers offensively in their last two and with the Gamecocks hurting on the defensive end, look for the home team to pour it on even more. Receiver Quartney Davis (12 yards/catch, 4 TD's) will be questionable with an undisclosed injury.
As pointed out, Texas A&M continues to perform better and better on the defensive end lately. In fact, they are ranked in the top-50 nationally in total yards per game (335), pass yards allowed per game (193), along with rushing yards (142). Texas A&M allowed thirty points or more in two games this year in a loss versus the Alabama Crimson Tide as well as in a home victory versus the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. As a whole, the unit has allowed just 22 points per game to opponents in 2019. Defensive lineman Michael Clemmons along with defensive back Charles Oliver are questionable for this game with undisclosed injuries.
- Gamecocks are 1-4 ATS last 5 road games.
- Aggies are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Aggies are 6-2 ATS last 8 after a SU win of more than 20 points.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The atmosphere in Columbia is just not the same after their defeat to the Mountaineers last Saturday. In fact, this could very well be a contest to where the Gamecocks actually outperforms Texas A&M while possibly pulling out a win. However, I have no faith that this will happen as I see the Aggies running the score up at some point versus a South Carolina team that is shorthanded and essentially playing for nothing at this point in the season.
Prediction: Texas A&M Aggies -11
Full-Game Total Pick
The defense has been the tip of the spear for the Gamecocks in 2019. So while the Aggies will seal the deal at some point, look for the visitors to keep their team within reach. That is, until someone makes a critical mistake, thus blowing the game wide open. In all, the under has been the result of the last three meetings amongst these teams. Expect this to be the case on Saturday as the total will not surpass its limit thanks to the home team bottling up a dismal offense for USC.
Prediction: Under 50.5
