Weeknights and MAC football are synonymous with one another and this week, all but one MAC game will be before Saturday. Our game, Akron at Miami (OH) will be on Wednesday night at 7:30 P.M ET on ESPNU. It will be one of two MAC games on Wednesday.
Akron has the worst record in college football, losing all 10 of their games so far. What's worse, they are averaging less than five points per game in their last five games; they have scored 23 points in their last five, including two shutouts.
Miami (OH), on the other hand, is the MAC Eastern division champs with a 5-1 conference record. They are red hot, coming off four straight wins, including a 44-3 drubbing of Bowling Green in their most recent game.
Akron Having Forgettable YearThere are few teams worse than the Akron Zips this year. In fact, according to Team Rankings, the Zips rank 129th out of 130 FBS football teams. They haven't won a game this season and one of their losses came against UMass, the only team Team Rankings has ranked after them.
In their last five games, things have gone from bad to worse. They have been outscored 173 to 23 in their last five games, averaging a head-scratching 4.6 points per game.
The biggest problem Akron has is their running game, offensive line, and defense. Their running game is the worst in FBS by a longshot. They're averaging 1.9 yards per carry and are the only FBS team averaging less than 75 rushing yards per game; they are averaging a mere 53 per game. The backs are partially the problem but their line isn't doing their job. Not only are they failing to help the tailbacks but they're allowing the sixth-most sacks per game in FBS (3.9). Defensively, they rank 115th in the country in points allowed per game (36.3) and 126th in takeaways per game (0.7).
RedHawks are on FireThe season didn't start great for Miami (OH) but that's all changed over the last four games. The RedHawks have gone 4-0 in their last four, earning them the trophy for the MAC East Division and putting them in the MAC Championship game.
The thing that sticks out the most for the RedHawks is their defense, which has stepped up during their hot streak. They have allowed just 16 points per game over their last four, an impressive number for any college football team but even more impressive when considering this is the high-flying MAC.
Offensively, the RedHawks have seen their freshman quarterback, Brett Gabbert, come into his own. Gabbert, brother of NFL quarterback Blaine Gabbert and former UCF quarterback Tyler Gabbert, has tossed six touchdown passes over their last four games while throwing just one pick. Before that, he had thrown three touchdowns and five interceptions.
Additionally, in their last three games, they have averaged 201.7 rushing yards per game.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Wednesday games.
- 7-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
- 6-0 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games in November.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- 3-13 ATS in their last 16 conference games.
- 3-14 ATS in their last 17 games following an ATS loss
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games in November.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I know this is a big line, but don't let it deter you. The RedHawks are going up against the worst team in the entire country. What's more, Akron can't block anyone and the RedHawks defense has been playing out of their mind. This is without a doubt their easiest matchup of the year and they're going to create havoc all day. Offensively, the Zips are going to let Miami do whatever they want. That's their modus operandi. Miami's MO is handling business and crushing teams they're supposed to beat; in their last seven games against losing teams, they have gone 7-0 ATS.
Prediction: Miami (OH) -31
Full-Game Total Pick
Again, don't let this line fool you. It's low but it should be because the Zips literally cannot move the ball with their horrid offensive line. They're averaging less than 5 points per game over their last five games and can't get any takeaways on defense (126th in FBS). This is the best under spot in the entire MAC this week. Miami (OH) is a defense-first team that manages the game on offense. In their last five games, the under has hit four times. The RedHawks win 38-3.
Prediction: Under 44
