The Mountain West Conference is front and center, and we have a good one on Saturday night when the #21 ranked Boise State Broncos meet the Utah State Aggies for a critical matchup for both schools. This marks the 19th meeting between the two schools with the Broncos holding a 15-3 edge in their school history. Boise State has won three consecutive matchups, and this matchup is important for both sides.
Who Starts at Quarterback? The #20 ranked Boise State Broncos are 9-1 and 6-0 in the Mountain West Conference, and Saturday marks a big game for them. A victory over Utah State distances themselves from Aggies, and if they follow it up with a road victory over Colorado State, the Broncos win the Mountain West Conference.
Utah State allows 180 rushing yards per game, and the Broncos have a pair of running backs more than capable of doing damage to the Aggies. Freshman running back George Holani has rushed for 692 yards, five touchdowns with an extra 136 receiving yards, and a pair of scores. Junior running back Robert Mahone has 411 yards with five touchdowns this season.
The Aggies allow 251 passing yards per game, and Boise State isn’t sure who will be quarterbacking this team, trust it will be a good one. Frosh quarterback Hank Bachmeier has missed three of the last four games. Backup quarterback Chase Cord is also injured, they might go with senior quarterback Jaylon Henderson. Henderson started last week against New Mexico and threw for 292 yards with three touchdowns with one interception.
Senior wideout John Hightower leads the Broncos with 754 receiving yards with six touchdowns this season. Sophomore wide receiver Khalil Shakir has 615 receiving yards with four touchdowns, and junior wideout CT Thomas has 410 receiving yards with three touchdowns this season for the Broncos.
Will Love play?Utah State is having an excellent season and is 6-4 overall with a 5-1 record in Mountain Conference play. This is an essential game for the Aggies as a win would force a three-way tie for the conference top spot. The Aggies enter this game riding a two-game winning streak, and a big Saturday could not only get them a postseason bowl invite but the chance for a conference title.
The Broncos allow 221 passing yards per game, and the Aggies aren’t sure who will start at quarterback on Saturday. Junior quarterback Jordan Love left last week’s game against Wyoming with an injury, and his status is up in the air. Love has thrown for 2684 yards with 13 touchdowns alongside 14 interceptions. If he can’t go, then look for sophomore quarterback Henry Colombi to make the start.
Senior wide receiver Siaosi Mariner leads the Aggies with 753 receiving yards with seven touchdowns this season. Junior wide receiver Jordan Nathan has 433 receiving yards and a trip to the end zone. Sophomore wideout Deven Thompkins has 423 yards with three touchdowns and senior tight end Caleb Repp has 359 yards and three touchdowns for the Aggies this season.
Boise State allows 117 rushing yards per game, and the Aggies have two running backs that can get the job done. Senior running back, Gerold Bright has 670 rushing yards with six touchdowns with an additional 187 receiving yards and one touchdown. Junior running back Jaylen Warren has 482 rushing yards, five touchdowns and an additional 150 receiving yards this season.
Update: (11/22): Columbi is now expected to start and Love is not expected to play with an undefined injury.
- Aggies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.
- Aggies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games.
The top supporting trends for this game found on Covers.com, are

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Boise State should win this game Saturday, but I don't think they win by 7.5 points. We don't know who will start at quarterback either team, but Utah State is 4-1 at home, and you can bet they will be up for this game. Especially the seniors playing in the last home game of their college careers. There is too much uncertainty in this game and whenever that is the case, than side with the home underdog. I will play Utah State to cover the spread in this game.
Prediction: Utah State +7.5
Full-Game Total Pick
We haven't the foggiest idea who is quarterbacking either team this week, and that will matter in determining an outcome. I suspect the Boise State third-stringer might be better than the Aggies back up, but we don't know that. Boise State likely has the better defense, and they will look even better against a backup, and that should keep the score down, and the same can be said for Utah State. Either way, these offenses won't be the same without their best signal-callers, and I will pick the UNDER in this game.
Prediction: Under 53
