We have Pac-12 tackle football in the house when the Washington Huskies travel to Corvallis for a conference matchup with Oregon State. Friday marks the 91st meeting between the two schools with Washington holding a 57-31-2 edge in their series. The Huskies won last season’s meeting by a score of 42-23 for its seventh consecutive victory over the Beavers.
Washington is 5-4 this season with a 2-4 conference record and is coming off a 33-28 home loss to the #9 ranked Utah Utes. The Beavers are 4-4 overall with a 3-2 record in Pac-12 play and enter this game on the heels of a 56-38 road victory over the Arizona Wildcats.
Washington Consecutive Home Losses to Top 15 TeamsWashington may have lost two consecutive games, but those came against #12 Oregon and last Saturday suffered a 33-28 home loss to #9 ranked Utah. That’s two losses against the top 15 teams by a total of nine points and that is something we need to pay attention to when considering the -10 points the Huskies are favored by in this game.
Oregon State allows 254 passing yards per game and Huskies junior quarterback Jacob Eason has slung it for 2297 yards with 20 touchdowns along with chucking five interceptions. Eason has been sacked a dozen times and he could be in for a rough day against the Beavers and its 25 sacks this season.
Eason has two main targets with over 500 receiving yards this season; senior wideout Aaron Fuller has 582 receiving yards with six touchdowns and junior tight end Hunter Bryant has 557 receiving yards and three trips to the end zone. Senior wide receiver Andre Baccellia has played a solid role this season with 270 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
The Beavers allow 176 rushing yards per game and junior running back Salvon Ahmed leads Washington with 712 rushing yards with seven scores plus an additional 55 receiving yards. Freshman running back Richard Newton has rushed for 326 yards and six touchdowns but is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury causing him to miss the past several games. Junior running back Sean McGrew has stepped up with 336 rushing yards, one touchdown.
Beavers Two Game Winning StreakOregon State is 4-4 this season and enters this game riding a two-game winning streak and has won three of its past five games. Both losses came at home against then ranked #15 Utah and the Beavers suffered a loss to the Stanford Cardinal. Utah beat Oregon State by 45 points and the Cardinal defeated the Beavers by three points.
Washington allows 158 rushing yards per game and the Beavers have a pair of good backs to hopefully make a dent in the Huskies defense. Senior running back Artavis Pierce leads Oregon State with 696 rushing yards along with six touchdowns plus an additional 134 receiving yards with one score. Sophomore running back Jermar Jefferson has 404 rushing yards with four touchdowns this season.
The Huskies allow 257 passing yards per game and senior signal-caller Jake Luton has thrown for 1930 yards, 19 touchdowns with just one interception. The senior quarterback has been sacked 16 times and is up against a Washington defense recording 20 sacks this season.
Junior wideout Isaiah Hodgkins is the main weapon for Oregon State and leads the Beavers with 895 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns this season. Sophomore wide receiver Champ Flemings have 268 receiving yards with a pair of scores. Senior tight end Noah Togiai has 26 receptions for 228 yards with one touchdown and sophomore wideout Kolby Taylor has 205 receiving yards and a trip to the end zone this season.
- Beavers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 home games.
- Beavers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games in November.
- Beavers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Friday games.
The supporting trends for this game found on Covers.com, are
- Huskies are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Huskies are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
- Huskies are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games after accumulating more than 280 yards passing in their previous game.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Over the past two weeks, the Huskies have had opportunities to upset two top 15 teams and ended up losing both games by a combined total of nine points. The Beavers defense is shaky at best and Eason should have a tremendous ballgame. Luton for Oregon State can also sling it and Washington isn't exactly a stout defense. What I expect here is a shootout and with the Huskies defense being a shade better than the Beavers defense, I expect them to get three stops or more and that will be the difference in this game.
I will lay the wood and play Washington to cover the spread.
Prediction: Washington -10
Full-Game Total Pick
I expect this contest to be a high scoring shootout with very little defense played in this game. If the numbers presented in this piece weren't enough to convince you to play the over, then maybe knowing the OVER is 6-1-1 over their past eight meetings in Corvalis.
I will play OVER the total in this matchup.
Prediction: Over 65 Points
