Saturday features a marquee matchup between SEC powerhouse, the South Carolina Gamecocks and the boys from Boone, the Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Mountaineers come in following a tough loss at the hands of Georgia Southern on Halloween night. South Carolina comes off of a conference win against SEC East rival Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks open as four point favorites and the game will be viewable on ESPN2.
Mountaineers Taste Defeat For First TimeAppalachian State comes into this match after a rough outing last time around falling 24 to 21 to Georgia Southern. The Eagles only attempted four passes all game, but that was all they needed as they shredded the Mountaineers defense on the ground. Appalachian State allowed 335 rushing yards in a poor showing. Quarterback Zac Thomas made a terrific effort completing 25 of 51 passing attempts for 271 yards and a trip of touchdowns. Unfortunately, it was all for nothing as the Mountaineers dropped their first contest of the year. This defense will need to make adjustments in order to compete with an SEC offense.

Appalachian State's offense is led by Thomas and running back Darrynton Evans. Thomas has accounted for 1,566 passing yards completing 62.6% of his passes. He's having an amazing season with 14 touchdowns to three interceptions. Evans has run the ball 142 times for 798 yards and is on pace to have 1,000 yards this season. The defense is led by a corp of linebackers headed by Akeem Davis-Gaither. He has 64 tackles so far on this campaign.
South Carolina Looking To BowlSouth Carolina picked up a big conference win last week against Vanderbilt 24-7. The running back position was very thin, but they didn't let that stop them. Third-string running back Deshaun Fenwick carried the load with 18 carries for 102 yards with starter Tavien Feaster sidelined mid-competition and back up Rico Dowdle out as well. Both should be available for service Saturday night. Ryan Hilinski had a great game passing 31 times and completing 24 of those passes for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The defense was outstanding holding Vandy to only seven points and 189 yards of total offense.
Hilinski has been the face of the operation this year completing 61.2% of his passes for 1,752 yards with ten touchdowns to three interceptions. The Gamecocks have a two-headed rushing attack in the form of Feaster and Dowdle, and Fenwick proved he can step in if needed as well. Feaster has run for 625 yards and five touchdowns. Dowdle has accounted for 457 yards and four touchdowns. The defense is led by linebackers T.J. Brunson and Ernest Jones. The duo have combined for 131 tackles and have been solid all year.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I love South Carolina here in this contest. I'm not sure why this line is as low as it is. Sure, Appalachian State's offense can move the ball, but they were exposed last week on offense and defense and I don't see how their defense can stop the Gamecocks. South Carolina's third-string running back ran for 100 yards against a much better Vandy defense, and he will have help with Feaster and Dowdle ready to roll as well. The offensive line will open holes all game and it will be a long day for the Mountaineer front. South Carolina's defense has already shown us they can hang with the best, and this App State team shouldn't be much of a challenge for them. Lay the points with the Gamecocks with confidence.
Prediction: South Carolina -5
Full-Game Total Pick
I like the over here as I feel South Carolina will run down App State's throat all game and they will have their way with them. The Mountaineers offense is too good for them to not score some points themselves, and I feel they will be airing the ball out a bunch in an attempt to catch up. Both offenses have the firepower to make big plays and run the score up. I have this game finishing at 35-27 so I will back the over in a game that both teams will be hungry to win.
Prediction: Over 51
