Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Troy Trojans, Preview, and Odds
NCAAF: Saturday, November 9, 2019, Veterans Memorial Stadium, Troy, Alabama, 3:30 pm EDT
The Georgia Southern Eagles are visiting Alabama to face the Troy Trojans in their search for the fifth consecutive win. They improved to a 5-3 record after a recent win over Appalachian State on the road and are in the 4th position in Sun Belt with two wins behind the Mountaineers.
The Troy Trojans will be back home from a two-game road trip on which they suffered two defeats, including the latest one to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. They dropped to a 3-5 record and are in the 7th place in Sun Belt.
These schools met five times in the last five years, and Georgia Southern has three wins, but Troy was a better side in the previous two encounters.
The Eagles upset the Mountaineers for the second straight seasonGeorgia Southern surprised the unbeaten Appalachian State Mountaineers and handed them the first loss of the year with a 24-21 road victory. The Eagles got to a 24-7 lead in the third quarter, and although App State scored 14 unanswered points in the final quarter, the visitors got away with a victory. Once again, the Eagles’ passing game was non-existent as they collected miserable 16 yards through the air. However, they recorded 335 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the wings of Wesley Kennedy III, who had 145 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Quarterback Shai Werts added one TD as he collected 83 yards on 13 carries.
"This is a good milestone for us beating a Top 25 team, but we have to keep going," Werts said. "But we are going to enjoy this one for the next few days."
It’s not going to be easy to repeat that outstanding performance against Troy, who is allowing 142.6 rushing yards per game. Georgia Southern has the 7th best rushing offense in college football that averages 269.3 yards. Considering they are not using their passing, they’ll have to work hard to beat the Trojans on the ground.
The Trojans dropped a win in the last minute as they fell short to the ChanticleersTroy returned home after suffering a devastating last-minute 36-35 loss to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Trojans had a 35-28 lead late in the game when CJ Marable scored a rushing TD and then ran for a two-point conversion to give the Chanticleers their first conference win. Senior quarterback Kaleb Barker had a great game as he completed 26 of 35 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Kaylon Geiger was Barker’s favorite target; he finished the game with 145 yards and one TD on 12 receptions. Reggie Todd caught only four passes (89 yards), but two of them were for scores. QB Barker also added one rushing touchdown.
The Trojans have the top 10 passing offense in college football that averages 319.1 yards per contest. However, the Eagles’ defense is letting 352.4 yards in total (217.0 through the air), and the hosts will find it hard to have another 350+ passing game here. Troy is averaging 143.8 rushing yards per game, while Georgia Southern is allowing 135.4 yards to the opposing runners.
- 8-2 ATS in their last ten games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game
- 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 conference games
- 5-2 ATS in their last seven games in November
The top supporting trends for this game are found on Covers.com Georgia Southern:
- 3-6 ATS in their last nine games
- 1-4 ATS in their last five games played in Week 11
- 2-5 ATS in their last seven games played on Saturday
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Troy will be eager to respond to a narrow loss against Coastal Carolina, and they are encouraged by the fact that they beat Georgia Southern in the last two H2H duels. However, the Eagles are in a better form at the moment and in the hunt for the top place in Sun Belt, so it’s going to be hard for the hosts to avoid a defeat here. The Eagles have one of the best rushing offenses in college football, while the Trojans are excellent in passing. It’s going to be an interesting tilt, and although I am giving a slight advantage to the visitors, I am backing Troy to stay close and cover the spread.
Prediction: Troy Trojans +3 (-110)
Full-Game Total Pick
The total is set at 56, and I am going with Under for several reasons. First and foremost, Georgia Southern’s games are usually low-scouring ones, which was evident in their last four games that produced under 48 points (excluding overtime). Troy has a leaky defense, but they don’t have to worry about the Eagles’ passing game, as the visitors are not using it. There are going to be a bunch of running plays from the visitors, and the hosts might also turn to the running if their passing game doesn’t work. That means not so many points, and that’s why I am backing Under.
Prediction: Under 56 (-110)
