We have the Big Ten Conference in the house and we have what could be a good one when the #18 Iowa Hawkeyes meet the #16 Wisconsin Badgers for a matchup that has many implications that we will explain for you on Wednesday. Saturday marks the 92nd meeting between the two universities with the Badgers holding a 46-43-2 edge in this storied rivalry. Wisconsin defeated Iowa in Iowa City by a score of 28-17 and you can bet the Hawkeyes will be looking to avenge that loss on Saturday.
Hawkeyes Two Game Winning StreakThe #18 ranked Hawkeyes enter this matchup with #13 ranked Wisconsin riding a two-game winning streak with victories over Purdue and a road win last weekend against the Northwestern Wildcats. Iowa is 2-1 away from Iowa City and they will have a fight on their hands against the #13 ranked Badgers. The Hawkeyes are 0-1 against Top 25 teams this season and they need a victory on Saturday in order to remain in consideration for a post-season bowl game.
Wisconsin has the second-ranked defense in the country, allowing 139 passing yards and 84.1 rushing yards per game this season.
Iowa will look to throw the football and senior quarterback Nate Stanley has slung it for 1950 yards, 10 touchdowns with five interceptions this season. Stanley has been sacked 18 times and he’s up against a Wisconsin defense registering 32 sacks this season.
Stanley has a trio of receivers with the bulk of the receiving yards; junior wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette leads Iowa with 463 receiving yards along with three touchdowns. Junior wideout Brandon Smith has 407 receiving yards with four touchdowns and is OUT for this game, frosh wide receiver Tyrone Tracy Jr has 306 yards with two touchdowns this season. With Smith on the shelf, look for freshman wideout Nico Ragaini to get some targets and he’s caught 31 passes for 284 yards this season.
Badgers Two Game Losing StreakWisconsin has lost two straight games and a win on Saturday would be just what the doctor ordered. The Badgers are 1-1 against Top 25 teams and are 5-0 at Camp Randall Stadium this season. The two Badgers losses came on the road against the Illinois Fighting Illini and a 38-7 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes. This is a big game for Wisconsin and they will need to win out their remaining games for a shot at a Big Ten Title.
Iowa has the tenth-ranked defense in the country, allowing 178.1 passing yards with 87.8 rushing yards allowed per game this season.
Badgers junior quarterback Jack Sloan has thrown for 1491 yards, 10 touchdowns with two interceptions. Sloan has been sacked 14 times this season and he’s up against a Hawkeyes defense with 16 registered sacks.
Sloan has three quality receivers to sling it to this season. Junior wideout Quintez Cephas leads Wisconsin with 410 receiving yards with three touchdowns. Sophomore tight end Jake Ferguson has 21 catches for 247 yards with a pair of scores. Senior wideout A.J. Taylor has 187 yards with a touchdown this season.
The Hawkeyes allow 87.8 rushing yards per game this season and Wisconsin will look to junior running back Jonathan Taylor leads the Badgers with 1009 rushing yards with 15 touchdowns along with an additional 143 receiving yards and four scores. Frosh running back Nakia Watson has 247 rushing yards with two touchdowns this season.
- Badgers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 conference games.
The supporting trends for this game found on Covers.com, are:
- Hawkeyes are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
That's too many points for Wisconsin to lay in this game. I believe the Badgers will win this game but their offense isn't good enough to beat the Hawkeyes by 10 points. Iowa is going to also have trouble scoring against the second-ranked Badgers defense. This game is going to come down to one or two possessions and maybe a lucky break or two because these defenses are for real.
I will take the +9.5 and go with the Hawkeyes to cover in this game.
Prediction: Iowa +9.5 Points
Full-Game Total Pick
This is going to be a smashmouth tackle football game as two of the best defenses are featured in this matchup. The UNDER is 4-1 in the past five games in Wisconsin and that should be the case in this game. These defenses are too good and have been the entire season and I look for a highly competitive, low scoring game.
I will play UNDER in this matchup.
Prediction: Under 38 Points
