Independent New Mexico State will be looking to get their first win of the season when they face Mississippi on Saturday. Ole Miss is struggling this year at 3-6 and 2-4 in the SEC. New Mexico State, an independent, is 0-8 on the year. The last time they played was in 2015 when the Rebels won 52-3. Mississippi is a 28.5 favorite. Kickoff is Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

Aggies give up 403 yards rushing

It's just been one of those years for the New Mexico State Aggies. They are 0-8 and there hasn't been many close games. They have a couple decent chances down the stretch to get a win, or wins, over the likes of the Incarnate Word and Liberty, but then again, they could lose those as well. They're not winning this one -- the only question is whether or not they will cover the massive 28 point spread.

Last week they got stomped by Georgia Southern 41-7. It was maybe the most bizarre game of the year. Georgia Southern passed for 3 yards -- yes, 3 yards. Quarterback Shai Werts was 2 for 4 for 3 yards. But they did run for 403 yards. New Mexico State quarterback Josh Adkins was just 13 of 23 for 59 yards with 2 interceptions. Running back Jason Huntley was the lone bright spot for the Aggies, rushing for 133 yards and scoring the Aggies only touchdown.

Ole Miss misses again

Life can be rough in the SEC if you're not one of the top teams in the league. Wins are hard to come by, as the Mississippi Rebels have learned this year. They have lost 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 to fall to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference. However, they have been very competitive in many games. Last Saturday they almost knocked off Auburn before falling 20-14. Auburn racked up 507 yards to just 266 for Ole Miss, but yet the game was close.

Rebels running back Snoop Conner scored with about 6 minutes left in the game to cut Auburn's lead to 20-14, but Mississippi couldn't get any closer than that. Rebels quarterback John Rhys Plumlee went 11 for 21 for 86 yards with 1 interception but he also rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown on the ground. Mississippi rushed for 167 yards. The running game is definitely a strength as they average 225 yards per game on the ground, which is 17th in the country.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Take the Rebels giving up the points. This is a huge spread for a 3-6 team but circumstances warrant it. Ole Miss is 3-6 but they have played top teams like Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Missouri very well -- losing all but remaining competitive. New Mexico State has just been getting destroyed just about every week against far lesser competition. Also, the Aggies are one of the worst teams against the run, giving up almost 230 yards per game on the ground. The Rebels average 225 yards per game on the ground against good competition. They may rack up over 400 yards rushing this week.

Prediction: Mississippi -28.5

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Go with the over here. Ole Miss will run ragged over the porous New Mexico State defense, which gave up 403 yards rushing last week. Ole Miss may be closer to 500 this week on the ground. But Ole Miss is not a good defensive team either so while this will be a blowout, the Aggies will manage a couple of scores to put this into the over. The over is 4-1 in the Rebels last 5 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game and 10-3 in their last 13 non-conference games. Also, the over is 10-2 in the Aggies last 12 against an SEC opponent.
